In his 1997 interview with Oprah, famous actor Jim Carrey told this jaw-dropping story: --------------------------------------------------------------- “I wrote myself a check for $10 million for ‘acting services rendered’ and I gave myself 5 years … or 3 years maybe. I dated it Thanksgiving 1995 and I put it in my wallet and I kept it there and it deteriorated and deteriorated. But then, just before Thanksgiving 1995, I found out that I was going to make $10 million on Dumb and Dumber .” --------------------------------------------------------------- It wasn’t that he simply set a big goal and was able to hit it so easily. In fact, his auditions for the famous career-making Saturday Night Live show were rejected. And not just once or twice, but three times ! So how was he able to set such a seemingly impossible goal — which he set when he had nothing — and actually hit it? Popular answers include the Law of Attraction, manifestation. But having “attracted” and “manifested” a fair amount of mind-boggling results myself over the years, I think it also goes a lot deeper than that. Take these quotes, from Jim Carrey and a few others who’ve accomplished extraordinary financial goals, which hint at the answer: “I got paid a lot of money at one point so the focus became, for a lot of people, about that. But for me, it's always been the same goal: To stop the world for people.” —Jim Carrey "Money is a terrible master but an excellent servant." —P. T. Barnum, Founder of the Barnum & Bailey Circus "If money is your hope for independence you will never have it. The only real security that a man can have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability." —Henry Ford, Founder of Ford Motor Company Now, let’s be honest: Having the money was a very real part of these people’s goals. As it is mine, and most likely yours too. But here’s the key distinction: To be able to hit their money goals, they focused on NOT making money the priority. However, being able to do this doesn’t happen naturally for most of us. For example, think about how you’d feel if these 3 common business scenarios were happening to you : Scenario #1: Someone who you know you can help, and who also happens to be your dream client, tells you, “Thank you, but I’m not sure this is for me.” Scenario #2: You know that a potential client is going to be a nightmare, BUT you don’t feel like you can turn them away because, well, a sale’s a sale. Scenario #3: A client cancels their contract or decides not to renew, and now you have to figure out a way to replace however much they were paying you every month. How would you feel? Years ago, my answer would have been the same for all three: A sinking feeling of disappointment. And fear. Because if I lost a potential sale, or a retainer payment I was counting on…I’d be scared I couldn’t get another one. So I felt I had to take every interested client, even if I didn’t want to. Because money was scarce and hard to make. If you were raised the way most of us are to think and feel about money, this might feel familiar to you too. But there’s a big problem with this. Because when you believe that about money, it’s almost impossible to have it NOT be the priority. Which makes it MUCH harder to hit any of your money goals. Because then, every time you set a financial goal and don’t hit it? It gets harder and harder to bounce back from that disappointment. Until it becomes so scary and overwhelming that you don’t even dare dream of, much less act on, your big goals. That’s why this is the key to taking back your power over money and being able to accomplish your big financial goals: Learning how to shift your thoughts and beliefs about money so that you can handle the inevitable disappointments. Because once you do, here’s what happens: You’re able to focus on the things that will actually make you MORE money. While not getting deterred or paralyzed by the fear of disappointment. The good news is, being able to do this doesn’t require “magic” or “woo-woo.” It’s the result of mastering a skill that anyone can learn. The skill of pinpointing your thoughts and beliefs that aren’t serving you — because they’re contributing to financial fear and lack-based reality. And then shifting them to ones that support you. So you can take back your power with money. I’m not exaggerating when I say that more than anything else, this skill has made the biggest difference to my having been able to build the business and life of my dreams. And through ups and downs, including a global pandemic and a rapidly changing world, it’s the skill that has most helped me continue to grow my business, year after year, for over 9 years in a row. And that’s why I created Self-Made : Because I believe we all deserve to — and can — have abundant lives where making an incredible income is simply the byproduct of us living our most fulfilling, impactful lives.
