Recently saw a random tweet on my feed, and I’m paraphrasing from what I can remember: “I work with a billionaire… He has zero preconceived notions or limitations. Wants to start a new business and doesn’t know about the field? He just learns it.” Personally, I found it interesting. But his followers didn’t agree. “Yeah, I wouldn’t have limitations either if money wasn’t something I had to worry about.” As if being a billionaire automatically means the guy isn’t worth learning from. I used to chalk up thinking like this to a lack of common sense. But I have to credit a random video, this time on TikTok, for opening my eyes to my limited way of thinking. Again, paraphrasing: “I think [this happens] because of the individualistic culture we’ve cultivated in the U.S…where we make everything about ourselves and seek accommodations / validations for everything.” Adding my contribution to this chain of thought, I believe there’s one other missing piece that creates this almost-automatic response: Our limiting beliefs about what is or isn’t possible for us. Take the billionaire tweet for example. Now, I’m not saying it’s so possible for everyone to become a billionaire. Let’s be honest, it’s not. But do I believe that it’s within reach for so many of us — especially everyone who was able to read that tweet because of where they live and the technology they have access to — to create an incredible income for themselves? Yes, I absolutely do. But this is also where limiting beliefs come in. Because let’s say you share that belief too. And even more importantly, you believe that it’s possible for YOU. Then the thought process naturally shifts to: “What can I learn from this, to apply to MY goals?” Versus the “Must be nice” type responses that tweet actually got. Which comes from the limiting belief that having your dream business and income isn’t within reach. Just a small, but powerful, example of how changing your thinking can change everything . In fact, I’d say it’s the most important — and hardest — part of building your own business. You’ve gotta identify your limiting beliefs one at a time… Like the fact that you do have what it takes to build your dream business and life. And “all” you need is the willingness to learn, work really hard, and keep on going after every setback or challenge. It’s not easy by any means. But it’s doable. Plus, the payoff is more than worth it.
