I was 12, and it was a Sunday. I remember because it was Sunday Chinese school, and the teachers had decided to host an impromptu talent show. Wanting to impress my teacher, I volunteered the only talent I could think of⦠Reciting one of Sun Tzuâs Art of War chapters, by memory, in Chinese. (At that point, I had I think 4 of the 13 chapters memorized, so I had plenty of options to choose from.) My teacher was very impressed, and so, I had my show plan. Performance time: As I stood on the stage and scanned the crowd, I saw my mom and dad and smiled a little. I figured theyâd be so proud of me, and couldnât wait for my pat on the head (literally) after. I was already anticipating my dadâs toothy grin and the smiling tilted nod my mom liked to do when she was pleased. (After all, they were the ones whoâd worked so hard on teaching me to memorize the Art of War .) Thankfully, all the times my dad had had me recite the chapters over and over paid off, and my performance went off without a hitch. But⦠My parentsâ reaction wasnât exactly what I thought it would be. Grimly looking me straight in the eye, my dad said⦠âYou shouldnât have done that.â He must have seen how confused I was, because he softened a little and explained⦠âThe point of having advantagesâlike knowledge, or moneyâis not to flaunt them. Itâs for you to use, and to know. And the less others know about it the better.â What he didnât go into, probably because he could tell I was about to cry, was why. But over the years, Iâve come to appreciate the wisdom of that lesson more and more. And that story, and everything behind it, is why I donât do what a lot of other business coaches do: I donât talk a lot of detail about my revenue or net worth. I donât flaunt my expensive things on Instagram. And while I do like to share travel photos from time to time, I intentionally stay away from sharing the usual cliches. No judgment to those who do. It obviously works. And not to say I donât enjoy all those things either. In fact, I absolutely do. But I enjoy them for me , with my loved ones, and mostly in private. Points being⦠First, live and do business however you want. Share as much or as little as you want. With my example on one end and most coachesâ examples on the other end, youâve got a full spectrum of what works to choose from. Second, a mini marketing lesson: How you âattractâ a client sets the tone for your entire relationship with them. So I also donât love that kind of marketing because of the kind of person it attractsâ¦someone who is only focused on the money and the things. Instead, I prefer to run my businessâand work with clientsâin this way⦠Heck yes, we make plenty of money. Currently most of my private clients (because those are the only ones I can really speak to, although we do have course customers let us know as well from time to time how their revenues are now a lot higher than they used to be) make anywhere from $20,000 to six-figures per month. But the way we do it, is that itâs the result of having a systematized business, creating a lot of impact, and developing world-class coaching, teaching, marketing, sales, and business skills. And thus having the cash come in because youâre doing what you want to do. Not because the money is the end-all-be-all. Third, I believe that a little mystery, a little privacy, is way more interesting than living your life out on social media. Over the past year, my clients have lived incredible lives⦠â¦Taking time off for the first time ever because their business brought in tens of thousands of dollarsâ¦in profitâ¦in a single month â¦Traveling to Hawaii, Paris, and other parts of Europe, for a few weeks and completely disconnecting to enjoy the momentâ¦because their businesses were set up for it â¦Flying across the country, business class, for a five-star weekend, just because they had the time, flexibility, and money to do so â¦Remodeling their home (which looks so good it could fit in Architectural Digest ), buying new homes, and upgrading all their design and furnitureâ¦because their businesses could pay for it And not one of them had to share any of this on social media in order to perpetuate their brand or their amazingness. Again, nothing wrong with that. But here in LZ Land, this is more the norm: Develop rock-solid marketing and sales skills, so you know how to connect with your customers and make plenty of sales. Lead with thoughtful, frequent contentâ¦that stands out from most of the fluff out there. Build the systems and team that support you in having a true Freedom Business. Work hardâ¦and love it. Because youâre having a lot of fun. And celebrate in privateâ¦all the way to the bank. ⨠Luisa Zhou PS - If youâd like my help building your own business this way, hereâs what I have for you right now⦠If you want to build a business to replaces your 9-to-5: [The 4-Step Formula I Used to Build My Coaching Business and Replace My Salary BEFORE I Left my 9-5]( If youâre ready to shift from 1-on-1 to no longer trading time for money: [How to successfully create & sell your own online course for true financial freedom]( Or, if youâre at 6-figures ready to scale to multiple 6- or 7-: [How to Go from Hustling Coach/Course Creator to 7-Figure Business Owner]( If you no longer wish to receive these emails, click here to
