Some months, I watch a LOT of Netflix (and work very little). Other months, I work…well, a fair amount. June is turning out to be one of the latter. Which - contrary to popular unwisdom that success means working less - I don’t mind. In my book, professional success equals loving your work. Plus, it reminds me of my earlier days in this business. You know, when it feels like you’re constantly running around with an endless to-do list. In fact, while I have a much more robust team and support system these days, my top-level current goals are actually fairly similar: >> Create more content >> Build a new product >> Coach my private clients Of course it’s not exactly the same - I could do none of this, and the business would still be running smoothly. Because that’s the point of a true business. (And a reminder to build your business with that end-goal in mind too.) But, my personal mission is to continually grow, not just sit on what I’ve done. So let me share some of the things that have helped me navigate the overwhelm that naturally comes with building a business. First of all… EMBRACE the overwhelm. It’s like a flowing river…Don’t try to fight it. Instead, go with it and let it take you further and faster than you might have thought possible. Basically: Don’t let it get in your head that your workload isn’t sustainable or that you should be systematizing more right now. As long as you’re building your business the way we talk about in LZ Land - where everything you do adds up - all your work will naturally build your systems, assets, and team, so you’re able to work less and less. But it’s just a “rite of passage” in the beginning. There’s no way around it - because you’re literally building a brand new entity from scratch ! Now, there’s one other thing I’ve always done that’s made a BIG difference in grounding me no matter how busy I am… Non-negotiables. If you’ve been around here for a while, you’ve heard me talk about this before. If not, the idea is super simple - but highly impactful: Identify the few things that make the biggest difference to your business growth - that you do every day. In the early days of this business, I had only one non-negotiable… Sales activities. As in anything that connects me with my ideal clients. Like posting on social media, pitching a podcast interview, taking sales calls, and talking to potential clients. Every day, if I did at least 5 sales activities, I was golden. Everything else could wait until tomorrow. These days, I still use the same principles. My non-negotiables are just a little different… Write a daily newsletter Chat with my team Support my few private clients Create one lesson for the new course I’m working on But this way, you have space to BREATHE. While knowing that as long as you get your non-negotiables done, your business is growing every day . And you’ll steadily chip away at your other to-do’s too. Until before you know it, you’ve built an incredible business that exceeds even your wildest dreams.
