Something’s been bothering me. If you've noticed, lately I haven’t felt like telling a lot

Something’s been bothering me. If you've noticed, lately I haven’t felt like telling a lot of my usual, fun personal stories! The reason isn’t bad, per se: Every day, I write what feels the most exciting and useful to share with you. And lately, I’ve been in a more thoughtful mood. Part of it is because we’re growing and I’m head down in systems and team building mode. So I’m leaning more into my engineering side than my creative side right now. Part of it is because I’m doing a lot of thinking about where we’re headed and what we’re going to continue to stand for. But it is still bothering me. Because I have a lot of fun telling my stories. And you know how I feel about following your fun - If you’re not enjoying the heck out of your business, what's the point? But also because I still have that old voice in my head, “You’re going to bore people away!” Even though I now consciously “know” better. Do YOU ever feel like you struggle to “stay interesting” to your audience? Honestly, that used to be one of my biggest fears. What if I put out something that’s so “boring” that people lose interest? On one hand, every piece of content you put out should re-earn your audience’s trust, interest, and attention. But on the other hand, there are SO many ways that you can be interesting - without feeling like you have to put on a show every day. Why people actually stay with you I’ve been doing this for close to a decade now. So I’ve got a few observations about what it takes to have staying power - especially staying top of mind. What I’ve found most fascinating, is how different people go about it: Some people build a community around the straightforward usefulness and insane value of their content. Others build their community focused purely on the strength of their charisma - their likes, dislikes, personal stories, opinions, and - well, life. Me? I like to do something in between. First, everything I share must have some piece of insane value in it. And of course that value can come from the information itself. But more often than not, it comes from my own lens of lived experience - whether it’s a story of mine, a share, or a thought. Because I’ve built my business this way, my people (shoutout to you!) know what to expect and find it interesting. Because of ME. (This is true for every one of us by the way - there is only one of us…ever. So our experienced insights are naturally unique.) But it’s a conscious decision how you build your relationship with your audience. And how you set the expectation for the way “value” will be provided. In my opinion though: If you want to be able to share whatever feels interesting and useful to YOU to share… …So you enjoy your business a lot more. …And build a stronger relationship with your community, your impact, and your work. …AND not have to worry about if you’re being too “boring.” The best way is to start sharing through the lens of your lived experience. And letting your natural unique and interesting insights shine.
