One of my core business beliefs: Sustainability trumps almost everything else. Because I plan on being around for a long time to come knock on wood . Not a flash in the pan. And of course, what I do...is also exactly what I teach. That’s why my take on using analytics in your business usually surprises most people—especially considering that I’m a former engineer. A perfect example is the work I’ve been doing lately with my Youtube consulting team. (I’m also sharing this to show a little behind-the-scenes of what goes into growing on a new platform—too many business owners make it seem as if they just work really hard and do it all on their own.) Anyways, my team is BIG on the analytics. Which means that a lot of their advice comes from analyzing what has and hasn’t worked in the past. But there’s a big problem that comes with doing that. You’re only able to learn from the things you’ve already done. So their advice often comes across like this: “Your top topics are ‘starting a coaching business,’ ‘sales,’ and ‘running a 7-figure business.’ You should create more content on those!” But this is where caring about your longevity comes in… Because following just your analytics completely takes the “heart” out of your business. Not to mention that only doing more of what you’ve done in the past, is a very common way to failure. Instead, I truly believe that the best and fastest way to grow your business is to “follow your fun.” Because when you’re having fun, it’s easier to create and do more. Plus, people can tell you’re in your zone - and that’s what we connect with! Take me for example: When I think about creating yet another video on a topic I already have at least twenty videos on? I’d rather do anything but that. So during my last brainstorming session, I threw their advice completely out the window. Instead, I brainstormed topics I wanted to share. Then, I had a lot of fun creating videos around them. (Like one of my latest videos, successfully building your business as an introvert.) And…surprise! Those videos have grown faster than any of my other recent, analytics-driven, topics. But this is also where the fine line comes in… I AM still very aware of my analytics. For example, I know that certain phrases or stories don’t resonate the way I imagine they will. So I use those learnings to practice improving my communication. But those learnings don’t lead the direction I’m going to go. Only you can do that. The analytics are just there to support. And that goes for ANY analytics in your business… Your social media likes/comments/saves. Your email open rates. Your email unsubscribe rates. Just to name a few common ones I see people getting stuck on. The point is… The thing that differentiates a truly successful business is NOT the cold hard numbers. Sure, it absolutely helps. But the most important thing is your heart and your “fun.” So if you’ve been feeling like you’re caught up in trying to figure out the technical details and it’s too overwhelming…take this as a reminder that your “numbers” aren’t the CEO in your business. You are. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
