Twelve pairs of eyes burned into me as I tried to casually brush off my faux pas with the old, “Haha, just kidding!” (not) trick. A new friend had invited me to her birthday dinner, her exact words being... “It’s just a few people. Super casual. Come when you can.” Taking that at face value… Not only did I arrive an hour after everyone else, but I also stuck out because of how under-dressed I was. Which tends to happen when you wear a t-shirt and jeans to a cocktail type event. Not my first time wearing the wrong thing, so I could have lived that down. Unfortunately, that’s not the embarrassing part… But there was no food at the table, so what was I supposed to think? I assumed everyone had been chatting and had just sat down to order. So I called out (loudly enough for everyone to hear), “I’m so glad I’m not too late!” Cue the silent, unsure smiles of twelve beautifully-dressed couples as they stared at this new-comer who was late, under-dressed, and now…totally not with it. Thankfully, one woman (in a very shiny sequined black and gold maxi dress) put me out of my misery: “Actually, we just ordered dessert.” I can still feel how red my face got at that moment. And this is why I need to have things spelled out… Just tell me when to show up. What the dress code is. Who else is attending. What’s expected of me. Basically…just give me the info I need, and give it to me straight. For anything, really. Especially a good sales page. Because all a sales page really is, is a page of information… …So there are no surprises. …Nothing you’re “missing.” …Or unspoken rules that everyone else but you knows about. When I write a sales page, it’s really THIS straightforward: I imagine I’m talking to someone who’s interested in what it is I’m writing about. And I just talk (and write). I share why I created the product, what it does, who it’s for, and why I think the world needed it. And then I answer all the questions that I imagine that person might have. Like… Does this really work? (What proof do you have?) What do I get out of it? What exactly do I get? Is this really worth it? What if it doesn’t work? Will it really work for ME? You also get to be witty, heartfelt, funny, and all the things you’d like to be in real life. ;) Without having to be corny, pushy, or salesy. And, oh yeah, you get to make sales too. Just how much in sales are we talking about? Well….is it another faux pas to leave you hanging like this without more details? Ha, alright, I won’t leave you hanging completely. I’ll be sharing some fun—and powerful—examples with you starting tomorrow. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
