This year, I've added yet another âjob titleâ to my collection: Content creator. Because if you're serious about building social media into a key channel, that's exactly what you have to doâtreat content creation as a full-fledged job! But I don't think other creators are honest enough about what this takes. So let me share a breakdown of what it really takes, at least for me, to be able to do all this... For contextâsince my focus this year is on creation, my goal is to average about 3 pieces of content per day . Thatâs⦠>> A daily email >> A daily short >> A weekly Youtube video >> 2-3 Instagram posts per week Hereâs what it takes to maintain that schedule: >> My daily email is pretty fast, because Iâve practiced for years to be able to get it down to about 30 minutes a day. >> Iâll batch my shorts in rounds of tenâso Iâll script all ten in one day (which usually takes I believe an hour or two, especially since I tend to get distracted in between shorts), and record the next day (which takes about an hour). >> Iâll script my weekly Youtube video, which takes about letâs say four hours total per week. (These days it takes me about three hours to script each video because weâve got some serious growth goals. But for my first few years on Youtube, Iâd bullet out my talking points in five minutes, and hit recordâsharing because that was more than good enough to start!) >> And my Instagram posts? Letâs say they average about 15 to 20 minutes each with writing them and messing around on Canva. So an hour a week. So total about nine hours a week. Which doesnât sound TOO bad, until you also add on all the things Iâm NOT personally doing⦠>> I donât post my content or set up my email newsletters. Either someone on my team does it for me or it gets scheduled beforehand. >> I donât edit any of my own shorts or videosâwhich would easily double my time spent every week. >> I also have consultants who review my Youtube analytics and scripts to tighten everything (which saves me time reviewing and having to be too detailed). >> I donât do any of my own designâeven though I âmess aroundâ in Canva, my amazing designer (shoutout to Laura Patricelli at designmastermind.com) creates all my templates. And frankly, even with all of that⦠Growth is SLOOOWWWWW At least relative to every other part of my business. But I knew it would be, because thatâs social media for 99.9% of people, myself included. Which is why I waited until year nine in this business to commit to growing my social media. Not to mention that this doesnât even take into account a very important factor: The time I need to spend to actually grow the business!! For me, now, nine years in, thatâs actually not that much time. Iâve built an amazing team and systems that pretty much do everything else for me. But if I didnât have thatâ¦that would be several other full-time jobs! Not to mention how stressed I would be if I had to rely just on social media for lead generation and sales. But thatâs why I built my systems, team, and other traffic sources FIRST. So I could have the time and resources to invest into growing on social media. A very different take compared to most coaches who teach you to build a business on social media first. Sure social might be good for connecting with a few clients initially. But to rely on it to grow you business? Well, now you know the behind-the-scenes. For me at least. So take that as you will. But if you want to build your business in a much faster, consistent, and more scalable way? Thatâs why I recommend every coach, consultant, and course creator get started on their SEO as soon as possible. Having built my SEO growth systems is why Iâm now able to still work only 20 hours a week or less in my business, despite more than half of that now going to content creation. AND not have to worry about driving leads or sales from social media, because Iâve got my SEO backbone doing the heavy lifting on those for me. So that I can play the long game and do what I need to to continue growing my business, without sacrificing growth or sales in the short-term.
