A client recently said to me after yet another round of feedback on her funnel: “I can’t help thinking about all the BIG things I want to accomplish with my business. Working so much on my marketing and copywriting skills right now just feels so “small” and pointless in comparison! Like, why am I spending time on this? Shouldn’t I be working on ‘bigger’ things right now?” It’s a fair point—one I used to think about often myself! So let me break down what I shared with my client. And what I’d say to myself if I could go back in time… Building your business is literal—you’re actually building a tangible thing, one block at a time. Those blocks being a few key skills that will form the basis for EVERYTHING else in your business. Those skills are: **Marketing. This includes knowing how to get your name out there, attract people to you, and communicate in a way that resonates with your community and clients. **Sales. If you don’t have sales, you don’t have a business. ‘Nuff said. **Communication. This is so you can deeply “get” others and know how to share what you have to share in a way that connects with them. And so you can bring out all your energy and who you are to everything you share. **Self-awareness/Mindset/Emotional intelligence. Lots of names (and subsets) for this. But whatever name you prefer, this is undoubtedly THE most important skill on the list. You’ve got to be able to control your thoughts and emotions (versus the other way around, which is how it is for most people), release ones that don’t support you, and take on new ones that DO. **People management. I always think about this old saying, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Sooner rather than later, you’ll want to learn how to hire, manage, and lead a team so that you’re all working together to grow the business…so that everyone can win. **Coaching. If you want to be a coach, you’ve got to be good at the actual skill. And it’s not a certification that’ll help you get there…only actual practice will build this skill. (How do you build it starting out? Charge a lower price to account for it and be fair to your first clients—but don’t undercharge too much because don’t forget they ARE getting your experience and skills too.) Plus, being a good coach will also help you naturally coach and lead your team, which will grow your business a lot faster too. **Teaching. If you want to sell courses, you need this skill too, which is very different from coaching. Again, this skill can only be developed through practice. In short… THESE are the skills to work on if you’re serious about building your business to 6- or 7-figures. They took me to 6-figures, then 7-, then multiple 7-figures. (And I’ll let you know once I get there, but I'm pretty sure these are the same ones that’ll take me to 8- and 9-figures too.) Plus, they’re the same skills that allow me to confidently walk into any business room, even with owners of businesses 10x the size of mine, and know I’ll have something highly valuable to contribute. AND, they’re the reason I’m regularly asked to invest and mentor startups—and the reason I have a seat on the Nassau Ventures investment committee. Point being: I spent over seven years hunched over my computer practicing the “small” stuff. (And I still practice these skills daily.) Even though you bet I was thinking…when do I get to the “big” stuff? Because it’s the “small” stuff that earns you the right to play at the “bigger” stuff. It might feel less sexy than the advice floating around to just manifest your dream business or “feel” into it. But I promise that if you focus on these building blocks and developing your own skills in these areas… The results are a lot sexier.
