Some STRONG opinions on this topic! Including mine... A hot topic of debate: Team Sell-First: Sell your course before you create it. Team Create-First: Don’t you dare! Create your course before you sell it. If you’ve been around in LZ Land for a while, you know you’ll find me leading the charge for Team Sell-First. And I have no patience for people who claim Team Create-First is better because it’s “higher value” for their clients to have a finished product before selling it. In fact, I think Team Create-First is just flat out WRONG. Not only because it’s costing so many course creators ALL their sales. But also because even when Team Create-First’ers make sales, they have to deal with a lot more refunds because they created a “perfect” product that wasn’t what their customers wanted! I’m going even further, and throwing down the gauntlet… To Team Create-First’ers who try to claim this isn’t how business is “done”: Selling fist is not a new idea. In the start-up world, it’s known as creating a minimum viable product (MVP). And almost every pitch I see as an investor on the investment committee for Nassau Ventures—meaning I’ve got a good amount of experience with this—will mention their MVP and how brilliant of a strategy it is/was for getting started.) But that’s just one of the critical mistakes I see new course creators making…that keeps them stuck. Often for YEARS.
