Something I’ve always had a hard time doing: Depending on others. It’s probably the way I was raised—that typical Asian upbringing and work ethic, you know—but it’s contributed to some big weaknesses: For example, I could definitely ask for help a little more often. And I could also be much better at building and maintaining relationships. But, there’s one area it’s made me stronger in—that makes all the disadvantages more than worth it: Not being “needy” In my business, at least. I never wanted to have to “depend” on a client to be able to pay my bills. Or feel like I “had” to make a sale to a potential client—even if I didn’t want to work with them—because I’d be underwater for the month if I didn’t. And if I’m being honest, that desire—more so than any brilliant strategizing on my part—has played such a key role in shaping my business decisions. Like when I started my first online business. I didn’t turn in my notice until I’d made over six-figures on the side. Not because I didn’t want to leave my job—you bet I was itching to go! But because I didn’t want to let go of my steady salary until I had way more clients than I “needed.” It’s also been a huge reason why I live the way I do. AKA: significantly below my means. I’m not thrifty or frugal by any definition. But I love my life, AND I have the peace of mind of knowing that I can live on a fraction of my income. And it’s one of the reasons I have the business model I do too. Not only do I want to help more people, but I also prefer to have a business that drives volume versus having to rely on a handful of clients. Plus, it’s why I’ve built my business so that I don’t “need” to take on any coaching client—and thus get to only work with the people I truly want to. It’s affected HOW I grow my business too: If you don’t know, I first scaled my business to 7-figures using Facebook ads. I have so much appreciation for Facebook because of that. But it started feeling like I was just a puppet dancing to Zuck’s tune. My team and I would obsess about following every rule—only to still have our ads arbitrarily paused or the account shut down. Then we’d have to jump through hoops to prove we were in the right! Despite spending six- to seven-figures with them a year, and having our own account representative, who knew us and our integrity. I also didn’t want to have to “need” to worship the algorithm on any platform, so scaling through social media as a primary focus was out too. And affiliates—while I love the few affiliates I DO work with these days? I didn’t want to have to depend solely on others to continue growing my business. And thus almost through the process of elimination… I chose SEO as my primary traffic source. Because yes technically you do have to “depend” on Google and they do make updates to their algorithm as well. But their changes make a lot more sense and feel way less arbitrary. Plus, the few times I’ve run ads with them or had to contact someone? It actually felt like they kind of care about helping you. And, last but definitely not least… With SEO, how well you do is completely up to you: The quality of your content and the work you put in. No games. No one else.
