Truth. The behind-the-scenes you donât âseeâ As an awkward kid with no dress sense, athletic abilities, or natural charisma, I had one skill that gave me confidence: My ability to perform flawlessly during piano competitions. (Of course it was one of those stereotypical Asian kid things.) HOW I developed this ability is a story worth telling. Because it did not come naturally. In fact, my first performance, I completely blanked about 3 minutes in, had to restart twice, and eventually gave up without completing the piece. Because I just couldnât remember what to do next!! Standing up off that piano bench and making my bow was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life. Especially since I somehow managed to accidentally meet the surprised eyes of my parents, my teacher, and (it felt like) every single person in the crowd, on my walk of shame back to my chair. I felt so embarrassed that I promised myself I would do whatever it took to never have to feel that way again. So before my next competition, I did the one thing I could think of to make sure I would not, guaranteed, blank on a note again. I practiced again and again⦠While *making* myself forget in as many places, and as often, as I could. Because then, I could find the note Iâd forgotten and figure out a way to remember that specific note. So that even if my muscle memory gave out in that place again, Iâd be able to call upon my actual memory and keep on going. Doing this was not easy. Ha, thatâs an understatement. It was MISERABLE. Iâd sit in front of the piano for three hours at a time, repeating a piece countless times as I forced myself to do this. (All I can say isâ¦I must have been really traumatized by that first performance. I canât imagine any other reason I would have been this motivated.) But was it worth it? Well⦠I never blanked during a performance again. (So thatâs a HECK YES from little LZ.) No matter how nervous I got, how intimidating the crowd felt, or how long and complicated a piece was. This is the behind-the-scenes you donât âseeâ For example, back in those days, peopleâmostly the parents of my competitorsâwould often come up to me after a performance and tell me⦠âWow, not a single mistake! Youâre lucky itâs so easy for you - you must have such a good memory!â Iâd just smile and thank them. Because if they only knew. And I didnât realize it back then, but this is a common âsecretâ used by top performers: The idea of making something harder for yourself than it has to be, so itâs easy for you to deliver a flawless result when it really âmatters.â Like [Jerry Senfield]() in preparing for his stand-up routines, [martial arts]() in general, and [Kobe Bryant](=) as he trained himself to become the best basketball player of all time. Just like what goes into a 7-figure business thatâs âeasyâ...NOW But what nobody else will tell you about is all the âhardâ stuff that it takes for things to be âeasyâ... â¦I tested hundreds of iterations for my marketing campaigns and sales funnels â¦I practiced writing sales pages, emails, and postsâfor myself and my clientsâevery day, for over eight years â¦I studied traffic generation, copywriting, marketing, psychology, community, and sales. Like it was my PhD. For YEARS. (Iâm talking about studying from the real masters, like Kennedy, Barnum, Disney; not pop-up internet marketing gurus) â¦I spent four years perfecting my first flagship productâgoing through seven massive overhauls before finding the right sequence, content, and teaching style that resonated best with customers â¦I personally worked with 100+ clients on their products, marketing campaigns, and sales assets to ensure that I could consistently deliver results no matter the business, model, or industry Funny thing is, I used to cry that things were so much harder for me than anyone else Literallyâ¦cry. Because it felt so unfair! But now I knowâfrom experience, and having this same conversation with my own clients who now ask me why things are so much easier for ME!âI just couldnât see their âhardâ behind-the-scenes either. I hope this lands because thereâs a lot of talk about things being âeasyâ in this spaceâ¦and how you must be doing something wrong if itâs not. No, my friend. Thereâs nothing wrong. And youâre not missing anything. As I alway say, an online coaching/course business is simpleâ¦but not easy. So Iâve got some counterintuitive advice for you today⦠Embrace the hard. Itâs just a rite of passage. Plus, itâs how youâll end up building the âeasiest,â best business anyways.
