UGH. Not happy with Apple right now. All because of some unnecessarily complicated naming snafu: For the last few weeks, Stephen has been dragging me into every Apple store we pass by (and I suspect it's not a coincidence we’ve passed by so many). Apparently, the latest Airpods sound amazing…for a whole bunch of technical reasons I honestly can’t remember. But being the frugal guy he is, Stephen can’t bring himself to buy a new pair. Thus all the store visits—so he can check them out but not buy them. Well, after our upteenth visit, I decided to surprise him with a pair of these amazing new Airpods. So I went to the website and ordered the Airpods model 3. (If you’ve purchased Airpods lately, you know where this is going…) Surprised and excited, Stephen opens the box. And that’s when he realizes… I bought the wrong pair!! Apparently, the newest pair of Airpods is NOT the 3rd generation. But the 2nd generation NEW model. WHYYYY??? Because that’s how a fun surprise turned into a big disappointment. But hey, at least I’m determined... Because I returned that sucker and ordered the right pair. And now, all's right with the world. So what’s the business lesson here? I’ve got three for you in fact… (1) Better to be clear than clever - especially with naming products (2) When people want to buy, they’ll figure it out no matter the obstacles (3) …Which is why it’s better to focus on people who already want to buy than spending your time convincing people who don’t And a fun one… (4) It’s always worth it to surprise and delight someone you love, even if it takes a few tries!
