it’s HUGE. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t experienced it myself… Whenever I go to one of Stephen’s work events, I like to play a little game. Let’s call it…the “What do you do” game. Basically, you have to come up with a different answer every time you get asked that question. One time though, my creativity totally failed me and I just flubbed… “Oh, you know. This and that.” What happened next was an incredible lesson in character judgment. The guy asking me literally changed before my eyes! He went from an engaged, warm conversationalist…to giving me a sad little smile. Before I could blink, he’d made some smooth excuse and turned away to network with someone more worthy of his time. All because he assumed from my answer that I was some “unimportant” - in his eyes not mine - stay at home wife. I always get a good laugh out of that story. Especially since back then, I was doing a bit more speaking. And his response was a refreshing difference - at least for my slightly-too-inflated ego back then - from the kind of feedback I would get as a speaker. Because when someone’s first impression of you is listening to you on stage, held up as an expert and leader in your industry…well, of course their response is gonna be a little different. This happens “online” too!! Back when I used to run a lot of ads, even people who bought from me would still be a little skeptical of me and whatever product they’d bought. Because, well, their first impression of me was just another ad. Same thing with social media. But when someone finds you through longform content on your website… Well, I wouldn’t have believed the difference if I hadn’t seen it myself: * A LOT less skepticism…because they’ve seen the demonstration of your actual expertise through in-depth content. * Higher quality customers…because they’ve taken the time to learn about you and your methodology first versus buying blindly (relatively) * More likelihood to actually use what they buy from you, because of the above two things * Easier, faster sales…since the reason they found you in the first place was because they were looking for a solution * And last but definitely not least, they pay on time…again because of all the above Point being, one of the few times general wisdom is actually right: That first impression really is everything. It’s another one of the reasons why I changed the foundation of my traffic generation strategy a few years into my business. Don’t get me wrong - I still do and love ALL the traffic generation strategies. But the one that drives the most revenue, profits, and growth? AKA the one that changed the trajectory of my business?
