[Katie Porter for Senate]( I wanted to make sure you saw the email our team sent earlier. A special election has been called, and while that doesn’t actually move Election Day, it allows big donors to give even bigger checks. That puts a people-powered campaign like ours at a disadvantage. [Can you please chip in today to help us close the gap?]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Governor Newsom has officially called a special election in the race for California’s Senate seat. Here’s what that means for us. Quick refresh: After Senator Feinstein passed away, Newsom appointed Laphonza Butler to fulfill the remainder of her term. Senator Butler will serve through November 2024, and is not running in this race. California law allows a special election to take place alongside the normally scheduled election. The special election will elect someone who will serve from November 2024 through early January 2025, when all new Senators are sworn in. California will now have two elections side by side: - To elect someone to serve November 2024-January 2025 - To elect someone who will serve a normal six year term beginning in January 2025 The same candidates are running in both races, and there’s one really BIG consequence to that. Check out this Politico headline: [A headline from Politico highlighting the uncertain future of Dianne Feinstein's open Senate seat.]( That's right, this race is going to get even more expensive. That’s because contribution limits have now doubled. So folks who could afford to give $6,600 (the federal limit) can now give $13,200. That puts a grassroots powered campaign like ours at a massive disadvantage. Politico reported that as of June 30th, our opponent Adam Schiff had 495 donors who had already given the max $6,600. If all of those donors gave another $6,600, he’d raise another $3.2 million. By comparison, we have 47 donors who have given the maximum, and 99% of our contributions are $100 or less. Katie is SO proud to be running a grassroots powered campaign, but this unexpected change means we could be facing an even steeper cash deficit than we anticipated. We know this team can help us make up the difference: [Can you chip in today?]( [Donate ›››]( More to come, Team Katie Porter Katie is running for the U.S. Senate because Californians deserve a warrior fighting for them in Washington. Our campaign is people-powered, we don’t take a dime from corporate PACs, federal lobbyists, or executives from Big Oil or Big Pharma.
