[Article Icon 2] Off-Duty Pilot Tries to Crash Passenger Jet An off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot was [charged with 83 counts of attempted murder]( after trying to crash a flight to San Francisco by turning off the engines. The actual pilots stopped him and made an emergency landing in Portland. The off-duty pilot, 44-year-old Joseph Emerson, was in the jump seat in the cockpit when he tried to interfere with the engines. After subduing him, the pilots asked law enforcement to meet them when they landed in Portland.
