To view this email as a web page, [click here]() {NAME}, Sometimes I think we set the bar too high for ourselves. Excellence is great. And for a few key areas in my life â building amazing products, copywriting, [ironing]() â I want to go deep. [Gif] But Iâve also learned that you donât always need to become the worldâs best. Most of the time, we just need to get âgood enoughâ and move on. When we strive for excellence, itâs easy to fall into the trap of perfectionism⦠and then never try anything new. Q: What happens when you set "the best" as your bar for success? A: You start to become really selective about what you're willing to do. That's very logical. - "I'd love to learn how to tango, but I'm a terrible dancer now. It would take a long time to become great."
- "If I try to learn something new â like how to play guitar â that's time not spent on the stuff I'm already good at â like SEO."
- "I can only be the best at one, maybe two, things. I need to focus on that." Fast-forward this line of thought a few years â what happens? You can see the results at parties. Ask 100 people what they do for fun and 95 of them respond with their job title! Yes, yes, some people might say "travel," but how many of us define ourselves by our job title? How many of us introduce ourselves by asking, "What do you do?" For chronic perfectionists, this is the side effect of focusing too much on one major talent. You become, say, a world-class back-end developer ⦠and struggle to talk about anything else. It goes beyond just talking about your interests at parties, though. By focusing on âexcellenceâ over âgood enough,â many people short-circuit their careers. It's shocking how closely people's career paths follow their learning: [Chart] The people who advance the fastest in their careers are the ones who can quickly and easily add new skills that complement the talents they already have. Think about⦠- The copywriter who improves her public speaking and marketing analytics know-how⦠so people start to pay more attention to her recommendations
- The engineer who learns how to communicate better with non-engineers⦠and helps cut scope creep in half
- The CEO who adds accounting chops as the complexity of the business grows⦠and can invest more profit into continued growth The copywriter, engineer, and CEO didnât become the best at any of these things. But by becoming âgood enough,â they leaped ahead of their peers. By the way, when you talk to your boss about raises, be sure to mention all the new skills youâve been learning â inside and outside of work. It shows the kind of employee you are. How to teach yourself anything Part of my job as a CEO is to learn things rapidly and then teach them to other people rapidly as well, in a very nuanced, credible way. Over the years Iâve had to learn dozens and dozens of new skills this way. From scratch, under fire, with no time to waste learning theory or useless minutiae that didnât help me accomplish the task at hand. True, there are things Iâve spent years learning to do exceptionally well â like [copywriting]() â but with most things, I realized it was OK to just get âgood enough.â This is so liberating! All those fun things you want to learn and do get a whole lot closer when you just need to get "good enough."
