Here’s what I notice: Everyone LOVES their purchases. They could go on and on about why they love it and why it was worth the money to them — even though their friends thought they were crazy. [Earnable banner]() How to sustain motivation It’s January 31. How are your New Year’s resolutions coming along? If you’re like most people, they may already be in the rearview mirror. It’s easy to get temporarily excited over new projects, but it’s FRUSTRATING long term because the motivation almost never lasts. We end up jumping from project to project with no real results to show for it. Why can’t we just follow through? How do top performers keep going? Are they constantly inspired and excited about their projects? The answer is NO. Instead, they apply the right systems. How to get (and stay) motivated You’re probably familiar with this: You decide to start saving money, and you get really motivated. You give up things like ordering lattes and lunch each day and going out with your friends at night to save cash. And it works … for a few days. But then what happens? Maybe you cave and buy a latte one morning … then the next … then the next. Maybe you forgot to make lunch so you order out. And you’ve been working hard lately. Don’t you deserve a few drinks after work? Soon your goal ends up yoyo-ing like this ... [Goals yoyo-ing] ... and you beat yourself up over it! “Oh, I’m so lazy. I’m so irresponsible with my spending. I can never get this done.” Why does this happen? Why do we get excited and motivated to accomplish our goals in the short term, only to lose it over time? It’s because motivation is a limited resource. We only have so much of it when it comes to new goals. Once it’s depleted, that’s it. It’s a short-term strategy that can’t sustain any long-term goals. Motivation is great as a trigger for making change — but you shouldn’t rely on it because it’s fleeting. Instead, when you find your motivation is low, acknowledge it. Don’t beat yourself up. Go even deeper: Why exactly aren’t you motivated? Don’t just blame laziness either. That’s too easy and rarely is it actually the reason. For example, maybe the reason you can’t save money is because you simply like your morning lattes — and that’s okay. There are other [better ways to save money]() that don’t require you to give up your lattes. If you question the deeper reasons you are not tackling a goal, you’ll see opportunities for effective change. Remember: Motivation is good to trigger change — but don’t expect it to last.
