Trouble viewing this email? [Read it online]( [header] --------------------------------------------------------------- ISSUE JUNE 6, 2020 [leading] The Nasdaq Composite .IXIC on Friday became the first of the three major U.S. stock indexes to bounce back to a record high, recovering from a stunning coronavirus-led slump on growing hopes of a swift economic rebound. Wall Street has surged following a crash into bear territory in March as investors bet on a revival in business activity with the easing of a nationwide lockdown imposed to contain the coronavirus. Data on Friday showed a surprise rise in U.S. jobs in May, offering the clearest signal yet the downturn triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic was probably over, although the road to recovery could still be long. The benchmark S&P 500 .SPX is now less than 1% down on the year after crashing more than 32% from that level by late March, and is about 6% below its record high. The blue-chip Dow Jones index .DJI is about 8% below its own all-time high. The smaller Nasdaq 100 index .NDX hit a record high on Thursday, partly powered by tech-related names including Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O), Netflix Inc (NFLX.O), Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) and Apple Inc (AAPL.O). Closing at a record high, according to a widely accepted definition, would confirm that the Nasdaq Composite has been in a new bull market since its pandemic low on March 23. Following the horrific deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor, people across the country have been using the phrase “Black Lives Matter” mostly as a gesture of solidarity with the black community. However, the phrase does not exist simply as a social media slogan, but indirectly references the actual organization known as “Black Lives Matter.” What ideas does the group actually promote? In the opening paragraphs of the national group’s “What We Believe” page, the expressed mission is relatively straight-forward: working to expose and prevent police brutality, unjust deaths at the hands of vigilantes, and general racism endangering black lives. The group also fully embraces its racial identity: We are unapologetically Black in our positioning. In affirming that Black Lives Matter, we need not qualify our position. To love and desire freedom and justice for ourselves is a prerequisite for wanting the same for others. We see ourselves as part of the global Black family, and we are aware of the different ways we are impacted or privileged as Black people who exist in different parts of the world. However, a little over half-way through the page, the organization then transitions from the subject of black lives, and begins discussing content regarding gender identity and family structures – subjects seemingly outside the original framework of Black Lives Matter: We are self-reflexive and do the work required to dismantle cisgender privilege and uplift Black trans folk, especially Black trans women who continue to be disproportionately impacted by trans-antagonistic violence. [liberal] We build a space that affirms Black women and is free from sexism, misogyny, and environments in which men are centered. We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable. We foster a queer‐affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking, or rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual (unless s/he or they disclose otherwise). Beyond that, Black Lives Matter has promoted some noteworthy anti-police rhetoric throughout the current national crisis beyond the rather bipartisan call for police training reform. On May 30, the group joined the hashtag #DefundThePolice and issued a list of demands. “We call for an end to the systemic racism that allows this culture of corruption to go unchecked and our lives to be taken,” said the organization. “We call for a national defunding of police. We demand investment in our communities and the resources to ensure Black people not only survive, but thrive. If you’re with us, add your name to the petition right now and help us spread the word.” Well…that’s certainly eye opening. [Here’s the real reason, and how NOT to get left behind…]( [trumpspacer] President Donald Trump welcomed U.S. Navy veteran Michael White home on Friday after White spent almost two years as a prisoner of the Iranian regime. Trump took the occasion to poke the Iranians and advise them against waiting to negotiate until after the November election in the hope that a Democrat president might give them a better deal. “I’m going to win. You’ll make a better deal now!” he informed Tehran. “Thank you to Iran, it shows a deal is possible!” Trump exclaimed in a somewhat less pugnacious tweet about White’s release a few hours earlier. In that message, Trump said he had spoken to White on the telephone while he was laid over in Zurich, Switzerland, en route to the United States. White flew from Zurich to Dulles International Airport on Friday morning. He told Fox News he caught a few hours of sleep on the flight and had steak for dinner. “I’m happy to be back,” White said from the runway at Dulles. “I’ve been semi-free since they let me go on parole in Iran. I want to extend my personal thanks to President Trump for his efforts, both diplomatically and otherwise, at making America great again, and I look forward to what’s going to happen here in the future.” White said his physical condition was “improving” after his release. He said he contracted the Wuhan coronavirus while in an Iranian prison, but was now “recovering pretty decently and getting back into shape” with the help of “the Swiss embassy and the Trump administration.” [More Here]( [Love it](mailto:support@westwingwire.com?subject=I love it&body=Keep it coming 🙂)      [Hate it](mailto:support@westwingwire.com?subject=I hate it&body=You must improve) [crazy] A real life creep show, here we go… A Pennsylvania woman was arrested Wednesday for allegedly keeping her dead grandmother in a freezer for 15 years while the family continued collecting her Social Security checks, according to reports. The grandmother, Glenora Reckord Delahay, died in March 2004 in Ardmore, about 10 miles northwest of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. She was 97. Delahay’s 61-year-old granddaughter, Cynthia Carolyn Black, allegedly told police she kept her grandma’s corpse because the family needed the money from her Social Security checks. She also claimed she had moved the freezer to Dillsburg, more than 100 miles west of Ardmore, in 2007, the Patriot-News reported, citing state police. She even moved the freezer!!! Police discovered the body in February 2019 while responding to a report regarding human remains inside a Warrington Township home. Black was arrested Tuesday and taken into custody at the York County Judicial Center, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. It was unclear whether she has an attorney who could speak on her behalf. Black is facing charges of abuse of a corpse, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property. YIKES!! [More Here]( How was todays issue?
