The chasm between the Nasdaq Composite and its rival benchmarks in the first half of 2020 has been much like that between Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt and everyone else in the world.
The technology-laden index has enjoyed an ever-widening lead between itself and the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 index so far this year due to its perceived resilience against the COVID-19 pandemic that wreaked havoc on financial markets and the economy starting in March.
The Nasdaq is up 10% year to date, while the Dow is down 10.8% so far, the S&P 500 is down around 6% and the small-capitalization Russell 2000 index is off more than 15% in the first six months of a dramatic year of events headlined by the viral outbreak.
The main benchmarks have actually staged a powerful resurgence from a rout induced by worries about the economic damage from closures and social-distancing measures implemented to curtail the spread of the deadly contagion that has recently gathered more momentum in a number of states.
Since a low hit on March 23, the Dow has gained about 37%, the S&P 500 has gained 36% and the Russell 2000 index has climbed 41%, while the Nasdaq has surged by more than 43% since that nadir, and it is that outperformance that has the Nasdaq up for the year to date.
Indeed, the last time the Nasdaq has been higher in the middle of the year while the Dow and S&P 500 were down was 1977, according to Dow Jones Market Data, and that this is only the second such occurrence in the existence of the Nasdaq, which was first established in 1971.
The Nasdaq is enjoying the best outperformance against the economically sensitive Dow since 1983, when it had a 20.3-percentage-point lead over the blue-chip index. Itâs also the widest half-year divergence between the Dow and the S&P 500 since 1983, when it held a 17.6-percentage-point lead.

Its mind blowing that she is in the United States Congress!
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) boosted supporters of a man that Israeli police say targeted law enforcement and injured one border guard enough to warrant a trip to a hospital.
Tlaib retweeted four statements from accounts accusing Israeli law enforcement of unjustly killing Ahmad Erekat, 27, on June 23 after he drove his car into a border checkpoint injuring one guard. Erekat was the nephew of Saeb Erekat, the secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

Israeli police released video of the incident a day after it happened.
The security footage shows Ahmadâs vehicle proceeding slowly through the checkpoint before he accelerates, swerves, and strikes a female boarder guard, knocking her flying several feet. Ahmad then jumps out of his car and runs several steps before falling as other border guards shoot him. It is unclear when the border guards began firing their weapons or how many shots were fired.
Israel Police international spokesman Micky Rosenfeld called Ahmad a terrorist and said the 27-year-old had targeted the Israeli border guard in a vehicle attack. The Israeli guard injured in the attack was treated at a hospital for minor injuries, according to Rosenfeld.
Tlaib is vocal critic of Israel and has a documented history of backing anti-Semitic movements and people, and boosting unverified information that places Israel or Israelis in a bad light, making anti-Semitic gestures as well as defending openly anti-Semitic individuals.

Sunday on CBSâs âFace the Nation,â Vice President Mike Pence refused to say black lives matter.
Host John Dickerson said, âOne thing protestors would like to hear is leaders say black lives matter. You wonât say that. why?â
Pence said, âAll my life, Iâve been inspired by the example of the reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. When I was in Congress, I traveled to his home church in Montgomery. With Congressman John Lewis, I walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on the anniversary of Bloody Sunday. I cherish the progress that we have made towards a more perfect union for African-Americans throughout our history.
And Iâve aspired throughout my career to be a part of that ongoing work. Itâs really a hard issue for me. And as a pro-life American, I also believe that all life matters, born and unborn. But what I see in the leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement is a political agenda of the radical left that would defund the police ââ
Dickerson interrupted, âLeave that out of it. Just the phrase ââ
Pence continued, âThat would tear down monuments, that would press a radical left agenda and support calls for the kind of violence that has beset the very communities that they say theyâre advocating for. Iâve literally met with African-American leaders around this country, and in the national capital area, who made it clear to us they want law and order, they want peace in our streets.â
Dickerson said, âSo you wonât say black lives matter?â
Pence said, âJohn, I really believe that all lives matter, and thatâs where the heart of the American people lies.â

How about some stir crazy US sailors?
Well, at least they donât have exposure to COVID-19.
The two U.S. warships in the Middle East werenât aiming to break a record.
But when the coronavirus pandemic made ship stops in foreign countries too risky, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and the USS San Jacinto were ordered to keep moving and avoid all port visits.
On Thursday, as they steamed through the North Arabian Sea, they notched their 161st consecutive day at sea, breaking the previous Navy record of 160 days. And theyâre on pace to crush it, since they wonât hit land again until they get home to Virginia later this year.
The milestone, Navy Capt. Kyle Higgins said, âis not one that I think we really wanted but one that the circumstances of the world thrust upon us. And we embraced it with style.â
When the ships left home in January, COVID-19 was just starting to emerge.
The isolation has been challenging. Port calls not only give sailors time for rest and relaxation, but they also allow experts to come aboard to do difficult repairs.
When the San Jacintoâs helicopter bay door broke, the crew members had to get creative. It was the middle of the night, and they realized they needed to replace a large sprocket.
âMy guys did the research, and they said, âHey, these 90-pound dumbbells are made from the same material that we need for this gear,ââ Crossman said in an interview from the ship. So, they took the dumbbell down to the machine shop and created the part.
âIf they were magicians,â Crossman said, âtheyâd have 100 rabbits running around the house because they keep pulling them out of their hats.â
