Using the SACLA X-ray free-electron laser in Japan, the team experimented on tiny crystals of synthetic diamond. For such waves to cross the velocity of sound, it would take a massive jolt to instantly get them up to this speed. Nobody has been able to precisely gauge how quickly these dislocations spread through materials up to this point. The team measured the speed of the dislocations spreading through the diamond using X-ray radiography, a technique comparable to medical X-rays that show the inside of the body.
