Plus: NASA reveals first images of US air quality and pollution 🌳 NASA's groundbreaking mission called TEMPO has started to bear its first fruits. The mission which stands for Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution, to monitor major air pollutants from space over North America was launched earlier this year on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. It has started producing its first data maps. These data maps show the levels of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, formaldehyde, and aerosols in the atmosphere, which affect human health and climate. The mission aims to support the Biden-Harris administration’s climate agenda and their vision of clean air as a fundamental right for all citizens. Must Read [🌍NASA reveals first images of US air quality and pollution]( 🍃 TEMPO is the first space-based instrument designed to measure air quality continuously across North America at a high spatial resolution of a few square miles. It operates from a geostationary orbit of 22,000 miles above the equator, where it can observe the same area throughout the day. TEMPO uses an advanced spectrometer to detect pollutants hidden within sunlight reflections. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said that TEMPO’s data will benefit neighborhoods and communities across the country for decades to come. The TEMPO mission’s focus is not only on general pollution monitoring, but also on enhancing studies on various pollution sources, such as traffic emissions, wildfire and volcanic smoke, and agricultural fertilizers. The data collected by TEMPO will also help assess the health impacts of pollutants, such as respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems, and cancer. Moreover, the data will enable the creation of detailed air pollution maps that will address air quality disparities within local communities and assist scientists and decision-makers in developing targeted interventions.
