Plus: Scientists observe bright jets of light shooting from a black hole like never before. Nov 24, 2022
[Blueprint]( Many of us know what a migraine feels like, but very few know what it looks like. A study shows [changes that occur within the brain when an individual has a chronic migraine](. These changes occur within perivascular spaces of a brain region called the centrum semiovale. Located underneath the cerebral cortex, the centrum semiovale consists of white matter, which affects brain functioning. While studying the perivascular spaces in the brain, researchers can learn more about these fluid-filled spaces, their contributions to migraines, and how they occur. The results of the study showed that the number of enlarged perivascular spaces in the centrum semiovale was much higher in patients with a migraine than in healthy individuals. It's incredible that these changes could actually be seen in an MRI image for the first time. Before taking a look at these never-before-seen images of a migraine and thinking back to the most intense migraine you've ever experienced, take a look at [this video]( that shows an intense volcanic eruption, the biggest one ever recorded. "In people with chronic migraine and episodic migraine without aura, there are significant changes in the perivascular spaces of a brain region called the centrum semiovale," said Wilson Xu, co-author of the study and an M.D. candidate at Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. It's the first time the changes have been reported, the study mentioned. The results of the analysis revealed that the number of enlarged perivascular spaces in the centrum semiovale, the central area of white matter, was significantly higher in patients with migraines than in healthy controls. "Perivascular spaces are part of a fluid clearance system in the brain," Xu said. "Studying how they contribute to migraine could help us better understand the complexities of how migraines occur." â The research team used ultra-high-field 7T MRI to study the link between migraine and enlarged perivascular spaces. They also compared the scans to see how different types of migraine lead to structural microvascular changes.
