Plus: MIT reveals a new, faster AI algorithm for solving complex equations. Nov 18, 2022 [Blueprint]( [Lab-grown meat is now officially a thing](. I mean, obviously we know it was around before… but now you can buy it, eat it… enjoy it? This is because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S. has now cleared cultivated meat for human consumption. This approval followed a pre-market consultation with a provider, UPSIDE Foods, (formerly Memphis Meats), and has found no further questions regarding the product's safety. So, get ready to tuck in. But before you hot foot it to the store to stock up, take stock of this. [This video]( shows how fast the speed of light really is… and also, how slow. (This will make sense when you watch it!) Good morning. I’m Alice, an Editor at IE. This is The Blueprint. Let’s get started. [Must Read]MUST READ [FDA approves the sale of the first lab-grown meat in the US.]( [FDA approves the sale of the first lab-grown meat in the US.]( The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S. has [cleared cultivated meat for human consumption](. The clearance has been given to UPSIDE foods, but there are lots of companies developing lab-grown meat, all around the world. Lab-grown meat is made by isolating cells from animals (without killing them) and developing these cells into cell lines that can be frozen for long-term storage. A small sample of cells from these cell lines is then taken out and transferred to large steel bioreactors, which have all the necessary nutrients and conditions needed for cells to grow and multiply in numbers. And that’s how meat is made. Well… it is now, anyway. As yet, the FDA has only cleared this product from UPSIDE Foods, and its clearance definitely doesn’t mean blanket approval for all cultivated meat. But, the agency has encouraged other providers of similar products to get in touch early on in their product development process and prior to seeking approvals for public sale. → This may be the future, but not quite yet. The technology is still years away from replacing animal meat, not least because the cost of growing meat this way is very high.
