Plus: Company claims orders worth $2 billion to produce âFuture Brake Systemâ in 2025. Nov 14, 2022 [Blueprint]( [Planet-killing asteroids]( theyâre every bit as cheery as they sound. But as much as they may sound like something straight off the pages of a sci-fi novel, theyâre very much real. In fact, scientists are calling them âthe latest existential threat to humanity.â And thereâs one âplanet killerâ in particular theyâre concerned about, an asteroid named 2022 AP7. Before you start scaring your elderly relatives with this information, though, you should probably know that the Carnegie Institution for Science says that, on its current trajectory, thereâs no way it will hit the Earth yet. And from one fast-flying object to another, [hereâs a video]( of astronauts undergoing fighter jet training to teach them to handle stressful and high-risk situations. Itâs actually quite stressful to watch! Good morning. Iâm Alice, an Editor at IE. This is The Blueprint. Letâs dive in. Dodd says itâs to teach them to handle stressful and high-risk situations. [Must Read]MUST READ [Planet-killing asteroids could be coming our way â here's why.]( [Planet-killing asteroids could be coming our way.]( So the [latest existential threat to humanity]( is a âplanet killerâ asteroid called 2022 AP7. But Scott Sheppard at the Carnegie Institution for Science says itâs not going to hit Earth yet, so weâre ok for now. But yes, you did read that right⦠yet. Sheppard and his international team of colleagues observed 2022 AP7 in a trio of ârather largeâ asteroids obscured by the Sunâs glare (the other two donât pose a risk). 2022 AP7 orbits the Sun every five years and currently crosses Earthâs orbit when Earth is on the other side of the Sun to it. But eventually, its movement will sync with Earthâs, and it will cross much closer, but this will be centuries into the future. Sheppard and his team have also suggested that there might be other âplanet killersâ out there that we donât even know about yet, cheerfully. â Asteroid 2022 AP7 is the largest potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA) found in eight years, with a diameter between 1.1 kilometers (1.754 miles) and 2.3 kilometers (3.6 miles). For context, any asteroid with a diameter of over a kilometer (1.6 miles) is enough to trigger a mass extinction event on Earth.
