Plus: The woman who saved the Moon landing (who youâve probably never heard of). Nov 11, 2022 [Blueprint]( Cures for dementia â thereâs a reason we talk a lot about this. We all really, really want one. Now, in great news, it seems the clean-up of toxic protein clumps [could prevent neurodegenerative diseases]( according to a new study. In short, it found that the relationship between two key enzymes could prevent dementia. The proteins in question were the enzyme Fyn and the protein Tau. They studied the area of the brain that causes frontotemporal dementia, a form of brain disorder that forms when parts of the frontal and temporal lobes are damaged, affecting behavior, language and movement. And it proved fruitful, to say the least. But before you check that out, check out this incredible woman, Margaret Hamilton. Never heard of her? Well, you have now. [This video]( shows Margaret Hamilton, the pioneering software engineer who saved the Moon landing. Yep, and yet hardly any of us have heard of her. Madness. Good morning. Iâm Alice, an Editor at IE. [Must Read]MUST READ [Dementia could be prevented by restoring and normalizing protein clusters.]( [Dementia could be prevented.]( A new study has found that focusing on the relationship between two key enzymes [could prevent dementia](. The enzyme Fyn and the protein Tau were under particular scrutiny. Researchers studied the area of the brain that causes frontotemporal dementia, a form of brain disorder that forms when parts of the frontal and temporal lobes are damaged, affecting behavior, language and movement. They found that Fyn, which is an enzyme that plays a significant role in learning and memory, became active when it was immobilized within the synapses â a link between two nerve cells â that connected hubs between neurons, where the enzymes normally communicate. The biggest discovery made though, was that enzymes change into an opened structure, like a blossoming flower, when they are activated. They also slow down their movement and group together to form clusters of protein. They then fold back into each other and disperse, before doing the same thing all over again. This matters because it meant they found out how Fyn and Tau cause the progression of different types of dementia. And, more specifically, which molecular mechanisms exactly are behind the interactions of proteins. â As a result, the team behind this research think Tau enzymes could hold the key to reverting this toxic chain reaction with Fyn proteins, which is what they say causes dementia.
