Plus: Don't worry, we'll never run out of oil, apparently. Nov 10, 2022 [Blueprint]( If you die in an online using this VR headset, [it will kill you for real](. No, this isnât Squid Game⦠itâs real. Palmer Luckey, (the guy who co-founded the virtual reality (VR) headset-making company Oculus), has made another VR headset that can kill you if you die in an online game. Yes, another. This isnât the first one. And what inspired him to do it? Well, it all boils down to an anime game called Sword Art Online (SOA), he says. But before you consider stepping into a real-life video game, step this way and take in something altogether less deadly. [This video]( shows an engineer building a bike with a flywheel kinetic energy recovery system, and itâs pretty cool. Good morning. Iâm Alice, an Editor at IE. This is The Blueprint. Letâs dive in. I say this because, Palmer Luckey, the guy who co-founded the virtual reality (VR) headset-making company Oculus, has just made another [VR headset that can kill you if you die in an online game](. By way of introduction, Luckey's company was bought by Facebook, (now Meta), and his product is now a critical component of the metaverse that Mark Zuckerberg plans to build the company around. In the new game (as with most role-playing games), the gamer begins the game with a certain number of hit points. When they drop to zero, the VR headset, NerveGear, emits âextraordinarily powerful microwaves,â killing the gamer. Dicey. Palmer's version of the NerveGear uses explosive charges that are directed toward the gamer's head and will kick in when his game ends in the VR world. The charges have been linked to a narrow-band photo sensor that will pick up red flashes of a specific frequency on the display of the headset and fire, killing the user instantly. â It doesnât end there! Palmer also wants to make the headset deadly if the gamer tries to tamper with it. Eek.
