Plus: NASA prepares to break the sound barrier with Lockheed Martin's X-59. Oct 18, 2022 [Blueprint]( Step aside COVID-19 vaccines, thereâs a new headline-grabber in town. Because according to the founders of German company BioNTech, mRNA [vaccines that can help target cancer]( could be ready for use before the end of the decade. BioNTech has been working on mRNA technology to develop vaccines since its inception in 2008. And yes, in 2020, BioNTech pivoted its focus and used its technological know-how to develop a vaccine to protect us against the coronavirus. BioNTech has multiple cancer vaccine candidates in clinical trials and is hopeful that its COVID success will aid its cancer work. But before you feast your eyes on that, feast your eyes on [this video]( which explains why weâre getting fatter. Try not to take it personally. Good morning. Iâm Alice, an Editor at IE. This is The Blueprint. Letâs get started. Last Sunday, Blueprint subscribers had an exclusive insight from scientists around the globe about whether coffee has many more (some fairly life-changing) health benefits than we realize. This week, they'll hear from the people behind the wearable tech that can charge your phone with 1,200 tiny solar panels. And theyâve got previous when it comes to vaccines, so they might well be right. BioNTech has been working on mRNA technology to develop vaccines since it was founded in 2018. Its portfolio spans influenza and â yes, you guessed it â COVID-19. In fact, before the end of 2020, BioNTech's BNT162b2 candidate had demonstrated 91 percent efficacy in preventing the infection in those vaccinated with two doses. Its vaccines use mRNA, a type of nucleic acid in the cells, to make proteins. And it says the same technology can be used to train the immune cells to identify protein present in cancerous cells and then destroy them. BioNTech already has multiple cancer vaccine candidates in clinical trials and is hopeful that its COVID success will help with its cancer work as well. â Türeci isn't certain that BioNTech will have a cure for cancer, but she is hopeful that breakthroughs made in the area can be used to advance the cause.
