Goodyear has just announced that it’s [producing new lunar vehicle airless tires]( in collaboration with Lockheed Martin and General Motors, and they’ll be ready in 2025. The aim is to operate commercial vehicles on the Moon (driven either by astronauts or operated autonomously), and the project is being developed as part of the Artemis program. To achieve these goals, Goodyear is utilizing its airless tire technology, which is already used on Earth for micro-mobility, autonomous shuttles and passenger vehicles. The three companies want to be the first to establish long-term commercial vehicle operations on the Moon. To achieve this, Goodyear is using its airless tire technology, which it already uses for micro-mobility, autonomous shuttles and passenger vehicles, here on Earth. The need for the new tech is because NASA wants future missions to tackle much more rugged terrain, over longer distances, in more extreme temperatures. These new tires need to be able to withstand temperatures as low as -250 degrees Fahrenheit (-150 degrees Celsius) at night and as high as (121 degrees Celsius) 250 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. → Goodyear has plenty of previous form when it comes to lunar tires – it even took part in the Apollo 11 project 53 years ago.
