Plus: Two NASA satellites lost after latest Astra launch fails Jun 13, 2022 [Blueprint]( Together with A Google engineer went public with his belief that the company's chatbot LaMDA has become "sentient". And after reading his chilling conversations with the bot, it's easy to see why. The engineer describes LaMDA as "a 7-year-old, 8-year-old kid that happens to know physics". Remarkably, it can hold a conversation on its own existence and its place in the world. But to be honest, this whole thing gives me chills. Weâll review the conversations that convinced the engineer of LaMDAâs sentience, but first, watch todayâs video to learn about a battery breakthrough that lets electric vehicles charge in mere minutes. Good morning. Iâm Derya, an editor at IE. This is The Blueprint. Letâs go down the rabbit hole. Lemoine is employed by Google's AI division and worked on a chatbot using the company's LaMDA (language model for dialogue applications) system. However, as Lemoine conversed with the chatbot, he realized that it may have become sentient and published the conversations in the public domain. Google isnât impressed. Meanwhile, Google said that the engineer breached confidentiality by publishing the conversations, stating that Lemoine was hired as a software engineer, not as an ethicist. The entire episode raised questions on [the need for transparency surrounding AI projects]( and whether all advancements in this area can be proprietary.
