Early last year, the world heard Mars for the first time when Perseverance recorded blowing Martian winds, clicks from its rock-scanning laser, and crunching sounds made by its rolling wheels. I was absolutely smitten. Now, using a microphone, a laser, and some clever mathematics, scientists have taken that one step further by calculating the speed of sound on Mars. Turns out, speaking in Mars' atmosphere may produce a strange effect: higher-pitched sounds travel faster than those low bass notes. Science-fiction writers, take note.
