Plus: Russia says it used its newest Kinzhal hypersonic missiles in Ukraine, A drug once used to treat alcoholism may cure retinal degeneration. Mar 20, 2022 [View in browser]( We would love to conclude the week better, but today's agenda is not very heartwarming. Yesterday afternoon, an LASD helicopter crashed in the Angeles National Forest with six people on board. Fortunately, all of the six passengers survived the accident. The crew on board the aircraft was on its way to assist the fire department in the rescue of a casualty. It is also noted that the helicopter crew performs between 500 and 700 rescues a year. But you may want to have a look at how mortar guns work before getting the lowdown on this incident. Good morning. I’m Mert, an editor at IE. This is The Blueprint. Keep reading. This is not the first time we hear of Russia using devastating weapons in Ukraine. There have been rumors circulating that Russia has been using the TOS-1 heavy flamethrower and thermobaric weapons on Ukrainian soil. Up until recently, nothing was confirmed. Did Russia admit it now? On March 10, however, the UK's Ministry of Defense [tweeted that]( Russia finally admitted to using the weapons that could be considered war crimes. It is stipulated that Russia first used the Kinzhal during its military campaign in Syria in 2016. Putin has referred to the missile as “an ideal weapon” that flies at 10 times the speed of sound. [Read More]( HEALTH [A drug once used to treat alcoholism may cure retinal degeneration]( [Human eye retina photos.]( Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have found that a drug once widely used to wean alcoholics off of drinking [may help improve sight]( in those with vision disorders, [according to a press statement]( released by the institution on Friday. - The drug disulfiram (also called Antabuse) was tested on mice and it was found to revive sight in humans with the inherited disease retinitis pigmentosa (RP), and perhaps in other disorders, including age-related macular degeneration. The drug is FDA-approved. “Because the drug is already FDA-approved, the regulatory hurdles are low. It wouldn’t be a permanent cure, but right now there are no available treatments that even temporarily improve vision.” For the next steps, the researchers will partner with ophthalmologists to conduct a clinical trial of disulfiram on a small set of people with advanced, but not yet complete, retinal degeneration. However, the drug comes with a major drawback: when combined with alcohol consumption it has severe side effects, including headache, nausea, muscle cramps, and flushing. Still, its results cannot be ignored.
