Plus: A new water-free method can keep solar panels free of dust Mar 15, 2022 [View in browser]( An asteroid struck the Earth over the weekend, just two hours after it was discovered. And thatâs the good news. Measuring at just ten feet wide, 2022 EB5 was around the size of a ladder. Imagine what else we could detect if we identify an asteroid that small earlier than two hours ahead of time. But before getting up close and personal with this asteroid, pour yourself a drink and watch our video that will show you how you can build your own magnetic stirrer from scratch. Good morning. [Video]VIDEO OF THE DAY [Make your own magnetic stirrer from scratch]( You'll never have to stir drinks by hand again with this handy magnetic stirrer machine. [Make your own magnetic stirrer from scratch]( SCIENCE [An asteroid is spotted 2 hours before it slams into the Earth at 11 miles per second]( [A meteor in route collision.]( A small asteroid called 2022 EB5 entered Earth's atmosphere on March 11, 2022. Estimated to be 10 feet wide, it moved at a speed of 11 miles per second. Thatâs not uncommon. Space rocks are constantly entering the Earth's atmosphere. However, what makes this asteroid so remarkable is that [it was discovered by an astronomer]( before it collided with the Earth's atmosphere. - It's such a rare occasion for astronomers to detect an asteroid before it impacts the Earth that only four asteroids had previously been spotted before they reached the Earth's atmosphere: 2008 TC3, 2014 AA, 2018 LA, and 2019 MO. With the finding of 2022 EB5, the number has now risen to five. The growing number of asteroids found before impact bodes well for our hazardous asteroid detection skills. Although the 2022 EB5 was never large enough to be considered harmful, the fact that we can discover small, non-hazardous items implies that [our detection skills are improving](. It is a goat.]( [Bex at the International Robotic Exhibition.]( Kawasaki, Japan's globally renowned motorcycle maker, [has built a quadruped robot goat]( named Bex that has wheels and can carry a human being on its back. It can also trot on its four legs and avoid obstacles on its own. - The goat is a product of the company's Kaleido program, under which it has been developing bipedal robots since 2015. The engineers were aiming to design a robot that could handle tricky terrain, and there is hardly a better source of inspiration than the Ibex, a wild mountain goat found in Eurasia and Africa. While we donât know if it can really handle steep terrain like the Ibex, the robotic goat can be used to carry out site inspections remotely, and can also be configured to carry cargo up to 220 pounds. Watch out. Nevertheless, there is a long way to go if the company is looking [to displace Spot in the near future](. [Read More]( SCIENCE [The MIT's new water-free method can keep solar panels free of dust]( [Waterless cleaning method to remove dust on solar installations.]( Scientists from MIT [developed a method that uses static electricity]( to keep solar panels free of dust, removing the need for constant cleaning with water. - Solar panels' output is reduced by constantly accumulated dust, meaning regular cleaning is essential. The cleaning of solar panels is estimated to use about 10 billion gallons of water each year, which would be enough to provide drinking water to 2 million people. Brilliant. The waterless, no-contact system uses electrostatic repulsion to make dust particles jump off the panel's surface. To make this happen, an electrode in the form of a metal bar is passed over the panel's surface, giving the dust particles an electrical charge. A charge is then applied to the solar panel, which repels the dust particles. The method would reduce the need for water to be trucked into desert regions to clean massive solar panel farmsâan issue that currently detracts from their role as [a sustainable alternative for producing energy](.
