Mafia boss on the run for 20 years caught thanks to Google Street View sighting. Scammers stole a whopping $14 billion in cryptocurrency in 2021 Jan 08, 2022 [View on browser]( Good morning! In today's issue, we peer at a perplexing galaxy. It's perplexing because it shows very little presence of dark matter. What could that mean? Moving on, we have a criminal who had been on the run for 20 years and only to be exposed by Google Maps' Street View. Finally, we discuss the DeFi platforms and their scamming problem. Did you know that in 2021, people were scammed out of about $14 billion in crypto? This is The Blueprint. Happy reading. CULTURE [Mafia Boss On the Run for 20 Years Caught Thanks to Google Street View Sighting]( [mafia boss standing in front of his shop]( You can run but you can't hide, at least not from Google. [Google Street View]( (from Google Maps) helped to catch an Italian mafia boss called Gioacchino Gammino that was on the run for 20 years. Gammino was convicted of murder and was among Italy’s most wanted criminals. [He was spotted]( and then later arrested, in Galapagar, a town near Madrid. He had successfully managed to stay there for 20 years, get married, work as a chef and purchase a fruit and vegetable shop. He had done all this by changing his name. A European arrest warrant was issued in 2014 for the criminal who is now 61 and the police had even traced his whereabouts to Spain but it took Google Street View to finally [find his exact location](. It was an image of two men talking outside a fruit and vegetable shop called El Huerto de Manu (Manu’s Garden) in Galapagar that first piqued the authorities' interest. They then discovered a listing for a nearby restaurant called La Cocina de Manu (Manu’s Kitchen) and once they checked its Facebook page were then certain they had found their man. They recognized Gammino dressed in his chef's outfit from the distinctive scar on his chin. Gammino was arrested on December 17th. We are still unsure about what they are or where they come from but we believe they hold galaxies together with their gravity. That's why we were shocked to find out [astronomers spotted a perplexing galaxy]( without the ever-elusive matter. It all began three years ago when Filippo Fraternali, an astronomer at Kapteyn Astronomical Institute of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, and his colleagues first came across a few diffuse galaxies that looked as though they lacked dark matter. A closer look. The researchers decided to examine one of them in detail. They picked one about 250,000 light-years away, called it AGC 114905, and used the 27 radio telescope antennas of the Very Large Array in New Mexico to study it. After a detailed investigation, Fraternali expressed that they came to the conclusion that “The dark matter content that we infer in this galaxy is much, much smaller than what you would expect.” So does AGC 114905 and galaxies like it indicate a problem with conventional dark matter theories? It's too early to know yet. More research needs to be done including the use of the [James Webb Space Telescope](. One thing is for sure though: what we discover will be scintillating! In August, a decentralized finance (DeFi) firm was [hacked out of $600 million]( worth of cryptocurrencies. In November, reports about hackers forcing Instagram users to film "hostage-style videos" as part of a bitcoin scam that saw the nefarious actors gain access to their accounts surfaced. Now, new data from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis reveals that scammers stole a whopping $14 billion in cryptocurrency in 2021. It's stated in the report that “DeFi is unlikely to realize its full potential if the same decentralization that makes it so dynamic also allows for widespread scamming and theft.” - DeFi transactions rose by 912% in 2021, according to Chainalysis. What exactly is DeFi? DeFi is a platform that effectively removes the middlemen from traditional financial transactions by replacing them with a programmable piece of code called a smart contract. However, a large amount of the new protocols being launched through DeFi have code vulnerabilities that can be exploited by nefarious actors. In fact, 21% of all hacks in 2021 were a result of these codes being exploited. “Given the hype around DeFi, people may have been more OK with using less secure platforms due to a fear of missing out on potential gains,” Kim Grauer, Chainalysis’ head of research, told CNBC. All in all, the report concluded that "crime is becoming a smaller and smaller part of the cryptocurrency ecosystem."
