I caught enough to make me reflect on what a wild content environment weâre living and working in. Hereâs one example: When Angela Bassett won the NAACP Image Award for Entertainer of the Year on Saturday, she referenced a line from [Ariana DeBoseâs viral rapped tribute]( to the women nominees at the BAFTA Awards, which aired the previous weekend. The merciless memes and mockery that followed that performance had driven DeBose off Twitter by the morning after the BAFTA broadcast. At some point last week, DeBose rejoined the conversation, even commenting on an Instagram carousel that included [an image of a tweet that read]( âwhen Angela Bassett wins the oscar she must start her speech by saying âand in the words of Ariana DeBose, I did the thing.ââ Then, at the NAACP Image Awards, Bassett [started her speech]( this way, âI guess Angela Bassett did the thing!â Got all that? This pickleball-like volley of content and conversations (across countries, events, people, and channels) characterizes many content-driven moments not only for celebrities and star-studded events but for corporate brands, nonprofits, and government agencies, too. Itâs both exhilarating and exhausting. Hereâs another reflection point: On Sunday, I watched [James Hongâs funny, moving, and standing ovation-winning speech]( after Everything Everywhere All at Once won Best Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAG Awards. But I almost missed it. After a colleague texted me about the broadcast, I looked for it on the Live screen of my YouTube TV interface. It wasnât listed. I vaguely remembered reading that Netflix picked up the rights to the show. So I fired up that app. Nope. I headed to Google, where I learned it would stream on Netflixâs YouTube page because Netflix hasnât launched live streaming capabilities yet. Really? Progress is a weird thing. It can be excruciatingly slow and suddenly too fast to act on. Unless youâre Angela Bassett â she did the thing. Iâd love to hear any content reflections you had over the weekend.
