It’s eerily hard to tell the difference between real Robert and robo-Robert. Compare Robert’s authentic voice [in this video]( (minus his Jeff Spicoli impersonation) to his cloned voice reading [this column.]( We’re not trying to fool anyone, so we disclose the cloning (and that he agreed to it) at the beginning of each story where we use it. And we do the same for any cloned voice (including [Stephanie Stahl’s](. But not all content creators and publishers make the same choice. And the potential for confusion (and intentional misrepresentation) spikes with AI-generated videos. That’s why YouTube started [requiring disclosure labels for synthetically created or altered videos]( with the potential to confuse or mislead people. The new rules apply to “realistic” content (“content a viewer could easily mistake for a real person, place, scene, or event” in YouTube’s definition). This screenshot from the labeling tool shows more details about the criteria. A popup box labeled “Altered content” includes this yes/no question: Do any of the following describe your content? - Makes a real person appear to say or do something they didn’t do - Alters footage of a real event or place - Generates a realistic-looking scene that didn’t actually occur Here’s the fine print: “To follow YouTube’s policy, you’re required to tell us if your content is altered or synthetic and seems real. This includes realistic sounds or visuals made with AI or other tools. Selecting “yes” adds a label to your content.” The disclosure requirement doesn’t apply to clearly unrealistic content (like animations or unicorns or other fantastical images) or to “inconsequential” changes such as color adjustments, blur or vintage filters, or beauty filters. For most content, the disclosure appears in the extended video description. YouTube will add a label to videos about what it deems “sensitive” topics: health, news, elections, and finance.
