To ensure these emails don’t end up in an alternate universe ran by Octopus-like aliens, add “cole@coleschafer.com” to your contacts. Every year, thousands of old, plump, sunburnt men get together in Key West Florida in celebration of Hemingway Days. The whole drunken lot of them wear their snow white beards long, comb over what’s left of their hair and, despite the heat, dress in berets and turtle necks to embody the spirit of their literary idol. It’s difficult to know for sure the genesis of Hemingway’s everlasting fame. While many claim its the result of his stripped-back prose, I’d argue few who make the pilgrimage out to Key West each year have ever cracked open and read, cover to cover, classics like [The Sun Also Rises](, [A Farewell To Arms]( and [For Whom The Bell Tolls](. The reason sixty-year-old men suck Papa’s polla is because he fought bulls, shot lions, punched-out professional boxers, stole urinals, drank alcoholics under the table, screwed everything that wasn’t nailed down and survived gunshot wounds, plane crashes and anthrax. However, what a lot of Hemingway admirers fail to realize is that despite the writer’s devil-may-care persona, he was about as insecure as a Corgi in a K-9 Unit comprised of Doberman, German Shepards, Rottweilers and Belgian Malinois and that ain’t not shit. Years ago, before Hemingway was Hemingway, he wrote an angsty letter to the poet Ezra Pound. I share the entire letter in my latest article, [How your insecurity might be evidence of tremendous creative potential](. But, here’s a small snippet of Hemingway’s pity party… " I am going to have to quit writing because we haven't any money. The Transatlantic killed my chances of having a book published this fall and by next Spring some son of a bitch will have copied everything I've written and they will simply call me another of his imitators. Now we haven't got any money anymore I am going to have to quit writing and I never will have a book published. I feel cheerful as hell. These god damn bastards. ” I say all of that to now say this… Despite the fact that I think Hemingway has become a bit overhyped, I still think he was one of the greatest American writers to ever pick up a typewriter. And, if a writer of his caliber was so insecure that he considered quitting his vocation.. it’s perfectly okay for you to be insecure too. Our responsibility as creatives is to find a way to create despite our insecurity. By [Cole Schafer]( P.S. Did this newsletter leave you feeling inspired? Tell someone to [subscribe](.
