But, I'll let you be the judge of that... THE "BOWIE" ISSUE. I'm not a religious man. But, I was something close on all those nights in Southern Indiana when my high school basketball gym would fill with wide-eyed spectators as my team would take to the hardwood in anticipation to pummel (or get pummeled by) some opposing team. Basketball in Southern Indiana is a war that has been going on for decades and each 32-minute battle is treated with the same level of seriousness and conviction as a holy crusade. While I would argue that God has far more important things to tend to than a high school sporting event, every team that has ever taken the floor or field believes that God is on their side. My team wasn't an exception to this delusion. Before every basketball game, we would form a circle, clasp one another's hands and chant the following... "Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen." Athletes never stop being athletes. The game changes. But, the winning and the losing and the keeping score and the believing that God is on their side remains the same. This trait doesn't leave the athlete. While I think being competitive is worthwhile in settings where there is a very obvious way to measure who is winning and losing, where I think it becomes dangerous is when you step off the court or field and into life and work and relationships where things become less black and white. You can't compete in relationships, especially if you want to experience a deeper, unconditional love. You can't compete with your friends or neighbors. If you're a college professor and your friend is a brain surgeon, how will you ever build a bigger house than him? I would even argue that, unless you're in a field like sales, you really can't compete with those practicing your same craft. Naval Ravikant, the CEO and Founder of AngelList, once wrote something along the lines of... "Escape competition through authenticity." This is a lesson that sports can't teach you. While Dennis Rodman might have been the most authentic basketball player to ever play the game, he was far far from being the best. To be the best in the game of basketball you have to be the strongest, fastest, fiercest, smartest and most skilled –– you literally have to be the best among the competition. While authenticity certainly plays a role, it's not the end all be all. Lebron James is "authentic" but Lebron James also has a 40 inch vertical. However, in life, business, writing and creativity "authenticity" matters greatly. David Bowie is a wondr... [WANNA READ THE REST?
