Here's some candid life advice I gave to a young, talented creative hating his life in sales. I don't even think the fucker is subscribed to my email list. So, this write-up is pointless. It's late last night. I'm having dinner with three close friends here in Tampa, Florida. One of them is a damn good fella I grew up with. He's three, maybe four years younger than me and he is just bursting at the seams with potential. Unfortunately, one's twenties are a strange and desperate time, a time where you can't help but feel like a squirrel dangling from an electrical line as you attempt to navigate life and work and love. He was recently axed from Angie's List because he wasn't hitting his sales numbers, an axing I imagine he will one day look back on and realize was the greatest hook that life ever threw at him. He's not a salesman. He's a creative. And, while creatives need to know how to sell, a quick way to slip a dagger in them is to make them sell something they don't believe in. So, over the course of this trip, I've been gently poking and prodding and nudging him in the direction he is wanting to go but has not yet found the courage. I hope this friend of mine finds it in him to build some sort of vocation around creativity. Or, at the very least, work a career that he enjoys while he pursues his creative endeavors on his nights and weekends. But, only time will tell. I'm writing this for my friend but also for you because I imagine there are other individuals reading this email who are working careers they aren't so fond of under a boss they wish would get brushed by a runaway train –– not brushed hard enough to kill them, just brushed within a few inches of their nose, just enough to scare some kindness into them. I'm writing this because, perhaps, nobody ever came into your life, took you by the ears and said... "You can be that thing you dream of being when your head hits the pillow. That or you can be something close." Contrary to common belief, beginning towards this dream doesn't have to involve going into debt, jerking off at a Tony Robbins seminar, moving to Los Angeles or working 100+ hour weeks like Gary Vaynerchuck is so quick to recommend. No, beginning to chase one's dream can begin with freelancing... hustling a creative service that you care about and are passionate about. This is how it's been for me in writing. At twenty-three, I knew I wanted to be a writer. But, I knew I couldn't make a living writing novels or screenplays or what have you, at least not immediately. So, instead, I built a freelance business around writing (whilst working construction and other odd jobs) and I began honing my craft on my nights and weekends. Today, my freelance writing business makes a good living and, while my book sales aren't "New York Times Bestseller" numbers, they turn a profit and I've been able to write three, going on four, in the five years I've run Honey Copy. So, what I told my friend, this friend who is a bit lost at the moment, was to begin following his dreams by building some sort of freelance business around a creative service he cares about.
