You’ve probably heard the news about a judge blocking the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, a commonly used abortion medication. I wanted to reach out to explain what’s happening and why it matters. [Josh Harder for Congress]( Disclaimer: Abortion medication is still legal and accessible in California. {NAME}, You’ve probably heard the news about a judge blocking the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, a commonly used abortion medication. I wanted to reach out to explain what’s happening and why it matters. What’s happened so far: Last week a Trump-appointed judge in Texas blocked the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, one of two medications used in the most common abortion regimen. Doctors have safely prescribed mifepristone to women for 22 years. Late last night a federal Appeals court ruled mifepristone could still be approved, but could not be used after seven weeks and could not be sent in the mail. The case will head to the Supreme Court, but in the interim there is wide uncertainty on implementation. Why this matters: If the Supreme Court agrees to suspend mifepristone, access to abortion in all 50 states would be severely limited. This would be the biggest blow to abortion access since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. This is an appalling attempt by one judge in Texas to exert his political extremism on every single American woman. It also threatens the core role of the FDA in our public health system and could have far-reaching effects even outside of reproductive health. I am deeply concerned about what’s next. Republicans around the country are already passing laws to ban abortion and defund Planned Parenthood, now they’re entering a whole new frontier in their attack on women’s rights in this country. We have to show we’re fighting back right now. You are a big part of our resistance.
