The fires have displaced families, and the smoke has made the air quality really terrible — it’s been hard to even go outside. Just look at the stark difference at one of my favorite trails: Even before these fires, our district’s air quality was among the poorest in the nation, and our rates of childhood asthma are also some of the highest in the country. 1 in 6 children in the Valley have asthma — a statistic I know all too well because I was one of those kids growing up with asthma. Now, these wildfires are making the situation for these kids that much worse. There’s a multitude of reasons why the fires have gotten so much more dangerous in the past decade, and one of the reasons is climate change. It’s districts like mine that are already dealing with the brunt of the climate crisis — so I understand we need to tackle climate change head-on. (Though my opponent disagrees and thinks it’s a hoax...) That’s why I was so proud to introduce the Future of Agricultural Resiliency and Modernization (FARM) Act. It’s a bill I worked on for months with our environmental community as well as our agricultural groups. The final product is a breakthrough in helping farmers be allies in the fight against climate change. It will dramatically decrease greenhouse gas emissions and allow districts like mine to be part of the solution. I know this bill is only the beginning of our fight, though. And I am prepared to keep fighting for our communities that are disproportionately hammered by the effects of climate change like fires, drought, air and water pollution, and extreme heat. Our district will rebuild after these fires. And slowly but surely our air will be smoke free. But I won’t let up the fight when the news stories fade. Our kids in the Valley are counting on us. Thank you for being a part of this team, and I hope you’re staying safe. — Josh P.S. None of this work is possible with your support, {NAME}.
