/UkxMfJKtiGiQNJ-6iBqIqwOPhZMosQmQVcmzVWMg6Zs=?refcode=20190819educationbillNA {NAME}, Trump likes to say that our economy is booming, but it’s communities like ours in the Central Valley that get left behind. I hear at every single town hall the same concern - “We need more good paying jobs right here in our community. We shouldn’t have to drive multiple hours away from home to make a living for our families.” So, I wanted to share with you what I plan to do about it. I’ve recently introduced a package of bills to build real and lasting pathways to good jobs - and it starts with reforming our education system. I strongly believe we have to re-prioritize skills training so our families get the skills they need for the jobs of today and tomorrow. Right now, the federal government spends 80 times as much on 4-year college degrees than skills education. This disparity means traditional 4-year education paths are taking priority over others, and it hurts communities like ours. Fortunately, it’s something we can address -- here’s a look at what my bills propose: - The School to Career Pathways Act -- Creates partnerships with local businesses and programs to offer hands-on career experiences starting in elementary school, including apprenticeships, internships, and other hands-on approaches. Early exposure to real world learning will help set students up for growth before they even leave the classroom. - The START (Short-Term Accelerated Reskilling Tracks) Career Pathways Act -- Increases funding for community college partnerships with local industries and expands Pell Grants to include short-term certificate programs, not just undergraduate programs that the grants are currently restricted to. - The Making Education Affordable and Accessible Act -- Invests in and expands funding for dual-enrollment and stackable credit programs for high school students. This would allow students to earn a certificate or associate’s degree while having their credits count toward their total degree requirement. I know some of these proposals might seem “in the weeds,” but I wanted to make sure I keep you updated on something that has the ability to shape historic progress right here in our district and across the country. While I’ve just introduced these bills, I’m excited to keep you updated as this legislation moves forward. Lots more to come -- thank you for all your support.
