[View this email in your browser]( Austria Auction Company will hold its 'Collector Rugs 12' sale on 9 September 2023 at 4pm CEST. The lots can be previewed from 6–8 September from 11am–5pm on 9 September from 11am–4pm. The sale offers over 300 unique pieces. A particular highlight is an early Yomut main carpet, mid-19th century ([Lot 193]( shown above). This kepse gül carpet clearly dates from the early 19th century, seen in the relative proportion of the field to the borders. The diagonal orientation of the field is balanced so that the top and bottom both have a perfect horizontal line of each gül type. Yet there are many features that make this carpet unique, one of which is the generous borders. Also interesting is the differences between the elems; the lower skirt uses two motifs rather than the single style used in the upper. Another idiosyncratic detail is the way that the motif in the vertical borders shifts out of the centre towards the bottom of the carpet. India is renowned for the textiles it produced for centuries for world markets around the Indian Ocean–from Indonesia to the east coast of Africa and beyond, into the Mediterranean and Europe. In this webinar, Jeevak and Banoo Parpia will focus on several designs drawn from their own collection and others, that exhibit continuity revealing an affinity for certain designs. Jeevak Parpia is a Professor of Physics at Cornell University. Banoo Parpia retired from the position of Director of Asian and Middle East Alumni Affairs and Development at Cornell University. Their joint interest in Indian textiles evolved in the mid 1980s, starting with textiles intended for use in India and later extending to Indian trade textiles. They have exhibited pieces from their collection in several shows. The most recent and comprehensive exhibition of their collection, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston this summer (closing 4 September), includes examples of both textile types. Formally the palace of the exiled Duleep Singh, Elveden Hall has been a Guinness family house since Singh's death in 1893. Among the 440 lots offered by Sworders on 14 September 2023 is a collection of fine carpets and textiles purchased by Edward Guinness, the First Earl of Iveagh, as part of his lavish refurbishment of both Elveden Hall, Suffolk and Farmleigh, Dublin, which commenced in 1894. Some came from Harrods and Harvey Nichols, with others being picked up in more distant locations on the family's travels. Among the 19th-century examples are two beautiful Ziegler Sultanabad carpets, an intriguing Kurdish carpet with an inscription and a large pale blue Amritsa, along with an unusual Heriz and a number of smaller carpets, runners and suzanis, with estimates ranging from £100 to £30,000.
