[View this email in your browser]( Live Showroom Auction: 31 July 2023, 10am EST Public Preview: 28–30 July, 11am–4pm EST Catered Exhibition Reception: 30 July, 12–4pm EST Material Culture continues to draw large and impressive mixes of antique, collectible and decorative rugs, carpets, kilims and trappings for its ongoing series of auctions under the rubric of 'Oriental Rugs from American Estates.' The current sale is number 59 in the series and brings together 443 lots from estates and private collections stretching from New England to California. Notable among many Anatolian offerings is [lot 39]( a large Kagizman rug with a main border of free-floating devices that are riffing off a border design that has been seen many times before, but never quite in this way (ca. 1875, est. $2–3,000/start reserve $1,000). Also notable is [lot 32]( an early 19th-century Karapinar rug with richly saturated natural dyes, including a wonderful green central medallion set against deep madder red and aubergine shades (early-mid 19th century, est. $5–10,000/start reserve $2,500). The sale offers a total of 99 weavings from the Caucasus and Transcaucasus, including an impressive number of inscribed Armenian rugs. Among these, [lot 36]( stands out in terms of its dramatic stacking of three bold Memling gul medallions, each rendered in unique variations of primary and secondary colours in lustrous mountain wool, upon which sits a celebratory inscribed medallion (19th c., est. $3–5,000/start reserve $1500). Among the many decorative room-size carpets, standouts include two carpets from the Yadid Dardashti collection. One is [lot 249]( a fine overall pattern Ziegler Sultanabad carpet in shades of azure blue (Persia, late 19th century, est. $8–12,000/start reserve $4,000). And the other is [lot 259]( a fine mansion-size Agra Polonaise carpet on ivory field (India, ca. 1900, est. $10–15,000/start reserve $5000). HALI readers and the public are invited to a catered live auction reception at Material Culture on 30 July from 12–4pm. This event is an excellent opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to view the items up close and network with fellow aficionados.
