In April, the focus of #RugFactFriday is Baluch rugs. Originating from an area split between the territories of Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, these captivating rugs were hand knotted by nomads from the region. Camels are invaluable to Baluchi groups, which is reflected in their rugs. Camel hair, as well as goat hair and wool, is often employed and the âcamel printâ or âgulâ medallion is also a recurring feature in the design. The Baluchi nomads are one of the few groups who weave the full range of tribal artefacts needed for nomadic life, using the full range of weaving techniques. Producing everything from prayer rugs and salt bags to saddle bags and eating cloths (sofreh), it is an understatement to say that Baluchi nomads are prepared for anything that may come their way. Our exploration of these exquisite weavings will continue in Chapter 2 of #RugFactFriday next week. Follow HALI on [Instagram]( and [Facebook]( to never miss a #RugFactFriday post.
