Happy Birthday, Juliette Gordon Low! [View in Browser]( [girl scouts]( October 27, 2018 A Message from Girl Scouts of the USA's CEO, Sylvia Acevedo Hello, Girl Scouts! Halloween is truly a day worth celebrating, as our founder, [Juliette Gordon Low]( was born on October 31, 1860. We celebrate Juliette’s birthday every year, just as we honor her legacy every day as volunteers, caregivers, alums, staff, and supporters who believe in Girl Scouts and help bring the Girl Scout mission to life. Juliette was a real visionary------ she deeply believed in the value of girls and the good they were capable of doing for themselves and our world at a time when our society did not. She founded Girl Scouts during a period of immense change, as our economy was moving from an agrarian base to an industrial one, and she knew what we continue to honor today: that Girl Scouts needs to prepare girls for the future by offering them experiences that equip them with the skills and the courage, confidence, and character they need to succeed in whatever path they choose in life. I can’t think of a better testament to the lasting impact of Juliette’s legacy than this year’s [ten National Gold Award Girl Scouts](. Pictured with me in the photo above, these incredible [Gold Award]( Girl Scouts are addressing, in big ways, some of society's grand challenges. I invite you to read about their incredible accomplishments in the news item that follows. Happy birthday, Juliette------ and Happy Halloween, everyone! Yours in Girl Scouting, Sylvia Acevedo Ten National Gold Award Girls Scouts Honored at the United Nations On October 11, Girl Scouts of the USA honored ten exceptional girls as National Gold Award Girl Scouts, the highest distinction in the Girl Scout Movement. At the event, held at United Nations headquarters in New York City, the girls were recognized for their impressive achievements that reflect leadership, passion, work ethic, and creativity in addressing some of today’s most pressing local, national, and global issues. This year’s theme for the UN’s International Day of the Girl Child------ preparing girls for the future through economic development and the world of work------ was emphasized, and the ten National Gold Award Girl Scouts received scholarships from collaborators Susan Bulkeley Butler, Kappa Delta Foundation, and Arconic Foundation. Longtime GSUSA partner and premier sponsor of the National Gold Award Girl Scout events [Toyota Financial Services]( also surprised each girl with a Chromebook. These young women demonstrate how girls are successful in their own right and how they’re already well on their way to becoming the next generation of leaders. What an incredible achievement! At a time when women account for half of the college-educated workforce but fill just 29 percent of science and engineering occupations, Girl Scouts is cultivating girls’ interest in STEM from an early age and helping them build valuable STEM skills so they can take the lead and positively impact our world. Looking for fun ways to let your girl’s G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ spirit shine through involvement in STEM and the parade? Check out our [downloadable activity sheets]( featuring parade bingo, creative coding puzzles, and more. And don’t forget to tune in to the 92nd Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, airing nationwide on NBC, Thursday, November 22, from 9:00 a.m. to noon across time zones. [CHECK OUT PARADE ACTIVITIES]( Apply to Be a G.I.R.L. 2020 Intern Every three years, thousands of Girl Scouts come together to make the most important decisions about the future of the Girl Scout Movement during a weekend of life-changing leadership experiences and fun! At Girl Scouts, we have a long history of giving girls the tools they need to find and use their voices to help change their communities and our world for the better------ often by taking civic action. One way to take civic action is by showing up to the polls on Election Day, whether you’re voting for the next president of the United States or for your local representatives. Voting is incredibly important and something you can (and should!) share with your girl. [READ MORE]( Broaden Her Horizons This Summer Girl Scout Destinations bring together Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors from across the Girl Scout Movement for adventures in the outdoors; science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); career exploration; and global cultures. This summer, girls can join an archaeological dig in Colorado, learn wilderness survival skills in Maine, or explore the culture and mountains of Peru------ to name just a few of the unforgettable experiences available. Want to learn more? [EXPLORE DESTINATIONS]( Alum Feature: How Girl Scouts Led One Woman to a Lifetime of Adventure and Friendship After reading the above item about Destinations for older Girl Scouts, did you find yourself wondering if it’s something your girl should sign up for? We think long-serving Girl Scout volunteer and alum Lori would offer an enthusiastic “yes!” As a Girl Scout, she participated in a Wider-Op trip (what today’s “Destination” used to be called) and several other amazing trips that took her and her troop across the United States and around the world. These travels made for a “life-changing confidence booster” that nurtured a lifelong love of adventure; in years following, Lori continued to explore the outdoors and other countries and cultures. Lori also credits Girl Scouts with introducing her to extraordinary friendships and mentors.
