[5-Bullet Friday](=)
Hi All! Here is your weekly dose of â5-Bullet Friday,â a list of what Iâm pondering and exploring. What Iâm exploring â â[This Enlightening Map Shows the Literal Meaning of Every Countryâs Name](.â I discovered this in my personalized weekly e-mail from [Mix](=). Did you know that Zimbabwe means âStone Enclosureâ? Or that Latvia means âForest Clearerâ? Iâm obsessed with language learning (for more on that, [see these articles](), and this perfectly scratched the itch.
What Iâm listening to â â[Colors]()â from [Radiolab](). This was referred to me by my friend, MN, who knows how much I think about the extreme malleability of perception and, therefore, reality. Hereâs the description: âTo what extent is color a physical thing in the physical world, and to what extent is it created in our minds? We start with Sir Isaac Newton, who was so eager to solve this very mystery, he stuck a knife in his eye to pinpoint the answer. Then, we meet a sea creature that sees a rainbow way beyond anything humans can experience, and we track down a woman who weâre pretty sure can see thousands (maybe even millions) more colors than the rest of us. And we end with an age-old question, that, it turns out, never even occurred to most humans until very recentlyâ¦.â
What Iâm reading ââ[Can MDMA help to treat addiction?](=),â a short interview with Dr. Ben Sessa of Imperial College, London. Here is one of my favorite portions:
[INTERVIEWER:] Why then do psychedelics seem to do better in the treatment of addictions than conventional treatments?
[DR. SESSA:] Because underlying addiction, and many if not most chronic mental disorders, is rigidity. Stuck rigid mental narratives about self and the world, which arise early in life as a result of early experiences, in other words, the very core building blocks of our personality, which stay with us for life. The majority of mental health treatments, and certainly all the medicines we use, like SSRIs, donât do anything to those narratives, they just paper over the cracks and treat the overlying symptoms. In my experience, psychedelics are the best new form of pharmacology that weâve come across that has the potential to actually tackle those narratives and allows people to build them up in a new, more positive way.###

What Iâm listening to â [Bebel Gilberto â Aganju](=) ([YouTube](=), [Spotify]()). From [Wikipedia](): âIsabel Gilberto de Oliveira (born May 12, 1966), known as Bebel Gilberto ([@bebelgilberto](=)), is a Brazilian-American popular singer often associated with bossa nova.âPoem Iâm reading and rereading â [Fragile](=)by [Nic Askew](We are fragile. You and me.
Though we act strong, our lives areheld together withthoughts of wherewe might be tomorrow. And of disappointedyesterdays.
At any moment we might shatter. We might fall to our kneesweighed down by the terrorof being so far fromour own control.
Dare we look up, weâd not knowwhere to go or what to do.
We are fragile. You and me.
If we were to turn to each other,we might see the whole worldon their knees.Hurting, and seeminglyalone.
But none of us are.
We are fragile together.(Special thanks to KJ for sending this to me.)---And, as always, please give me feedback on Twitter. Which bullet above is your favorite? What do you want more or less of?
