They have helped me dominate my league to the point that I'm called the Evil Empire by my league mates" - Rick Himes @bigisland31 [] 1. DAL: Serious injury for Trevon Diggs [Source: NFL.com - Eric Edholm]( Dallas Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs (knee) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during practice Thursday, Sept. 21, and will miss the rest of the 2023 season, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. Our view: Awful news here. Injuries are part of the game and the Cowboys will adapt but this is a big loss. [Back to Top](#top) [] 2. CIN: No practice for Joe Burrow [Source: Bengals.com](=) Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (calf) did not participate in practice Thursday, Sept. 21. Our view: We might be going into Monday evening still not knowing Burrow's status. If you have room, check on maybe a trade for Matthew Stafford if he's available or adding Baker Mayfield if that's possible so you have Monday night pivot options. [Back to Top](#top) [] 3. LAR: LAR moves on from Cam Akers [Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero]() Los Angeles Rams RB Cam Akers was traded to the Minnesota Vikings Wednesday, Sept. 20, according to sources. The two teams will exchange late-round picks in 2026 as part of the trade. Our view: Kyren Williams has been the best back for the Rams this year. Akers was frustrated, and the two sides got to move on with this trade. Now, Williams gets to prove himself further as the lead back. From a fantasy perspective, Williams is an RB2 with upside in this role. Behind Williams, Ronnie Rivers and Zach Evans (a rookie favorite of Matt Waldman) will compete to be the primary backup. [Back to Top](#top) [] 4. MIN: Minnesota acquires Cam Akers [Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero]() Los Angeles Rams RB Cam Akers was acquired by the Minnesota Vikings Wednesday, Sept. 20, according to sources. The two teams will exchange late-round picks in 2026 as part of the trade. Our view: Alexander Mattison has been disappointing (to say the least) so far this season. In two games, Mattison has just 19 carries for 61 yards and hasn't been the replacement for Dalvin Cook that some thought he would be. Akers is going to get every chance to earn the starting role, and he should be energized with a fresh start. [Back to Top](#top) [] 5. LAC: Austin Ekeler still sidelined [Source: Chargers.com]( Los Angeles Chargers RB Austin Ekeler (ankle) did not practice once again on Thursday, Sept. 21. Our view: Not great. We'll hopefully get more information on Friday as we look to the game ahead. [Back to Top](#top) [] 6. CAR: Bryce Young likely to miss Week 3 [Source: NFL.com - Eric Edholm]( Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young (ankle) is not expected to play in the Week 3 game because of his injury. Our view: That's back-to-back practices missed for the no.1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. Young has struggled this season, and the Panthers have not been fun to watch. It looks like veteran Andy Dalton will get the start. [Back to Top](#top) [] 7. GB: Aaron Jones back on the field Thursday [Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter](=) Green Bay Packers RB Aaron Jones (hamstring) returned to practice on Thursday, Sept. 21. He was listed as a limited participant. Our view: This is a good sign that Jones will be out there in Week 3. He missed Wednesday's practice, and Jones was held out in Week 2. With AJ Dillon unimpressive, Jones' return will have a positive impact on the Packers offense. Against the Saints in Week 3, we like Jones as a low-end RB2/flex play. [Back to Top](#top) [] 8. IND: Anthony Richardson misses another practice [Source: FOX59/CBS4Indy - Brett Bensley]() Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson (concussion) did not participate in practice on Thursday, Sept. 21. Our view: Richardson has been dazzling this year in two games, but he's gotten banged up in both contests. He's working his way through the league's concussion protocol, and we'll have to see if he can do something on Friday. The way things are trending, the Colts might have to start Gardner Minshew against the Ravens in Week 3. [Back to Top](#top) [] 9. NE: Will Grier signing with Pats [Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter]() The New England Patriots are signing QB Will Grier off the Cincinnati Bengals' practice squad, per source on Thursday, Sept. 21. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Our view: This is interesting for two reasons. #1 - That leaves just Joe Burrow and Jake Browning on the roster for the Bengals as QBs. #2 - Grier spent time with the Cowboys and New England faces Dallas in Week 4. [Back to Top](#top) [] 10. DET: Amon-Ra St. Brown back at work but limited [Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter]() Detroit Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (toe) returned to practice on Thursday, Sept. 21. He was listed as a limited participant. Our view: St. Brown is still a WR1 for Fantasy GMs as the Lions take on the Falcons in Week 3. He's not going to be 100 percent, and toe injuries can linger. It comes down to pain tolerance, and St. Brown is as tough as they come. He'll continue to be a big part of their passing attack so long as he suits up on gameday. KC: Isiah Pacheco upgraded Thursday [Source: Chiefs.com]() Kansas City Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco (hamstring) was a limited participant in practice on Thursday, Sept. 21, after not practicing the day before. Our view: We always want to see players moving in this direction. Let's see if he can work Friday. [Back to Top](#top) [] 12. TEN: DeAndre Hopkins absent Thursday [Source: TitanInsider.com - Terry McCormick](=) Tennessee Titans WR DeAndre Hopkins (undisclosed) was not spotted on the field during the portion of practice open to the media on Thursday, Sept. 21. Our view: Hopkins was listed as a full participant on Wednesday, so let's watch this situation. He's been dealing with an ankle issue, and perhaps the veteran needed a day of rest. As per usual, Friday is the big day for players battling injuries but hoping to play Sunday. Against the Browns in Week 3, we like Hopkins as a WR3/flex option if he's out there. [Back to Top](#top) [] 13. IND: Evan Hull likely done for the year [Source: Jordan Schultz](=) Indianapolis Colts RB Evan Hull (knee) is expected to miss the rest of the season due to a torn meniscus, according to a source. Our view: Hull was injured in Week 1, and he was placed on IR. Now, instead of being out 4-6 weeks, Hull may have to miss the rest of the season. The Colts got Zack Moss back last week, and Deon Jackson is still there too. Jake Funk could be getting more work, and the team is waiting for Jonathan Taylor to come off the PUP list. [Back to Top](#top) [] 14. BUF: James Cook not at practice Thursday [Source: ESPN.com - Alaina Getzenberg]( Buffalo Bills RB James Cook (undisclosed) was not spotted on the field during the portion of practice open to the media on Thursday, Sept. 21. Our view: Cook was absolutely fantastic last week, and Fantasy GMs are anxious to see more from the second year back. This is an undisclosed situation, so we just need more information about Cook before we start adjusting things. If Cook plays in Week 3, he's an RB1 for Fantasy GMs out there. [Back to Top](#top) [] 15. TEN: Derrick Henry not seen at practice Thursday [Source: TitanInsider.com - Terry McCormick](=) Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry (toe) was not spotted on the field during the portion of practice open to the media on Thursday, Sept. 21. Our view: Henry has a toe injury, and that could linger if not given enough time to heal. This type of injury comes down to pain tolerance, so there's a good chance Henry plays with the toe problem. However, we'll have to see what his status is on Friday. Rookie Tyjae Spears is ready to do more if asked, and he's a three-down back who can thrive as a runner or receiver. [Back to Top](#top) [] 16. DET: Another missed practice for David Montgomery [Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter]() Detroit Lions RB David Montgomery (quad) did not participate in practice for a second straight day on Thursday, Sept. 21. Our view: The Lions have other options in their backfield if Montgomery can't play in Week 3. Rookie RB Jahmyr Gibbs has star potential - if the team would use him more. They were excited to get him in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft, but Gibbs hasn't done as much as he could over two weeks. That might change as he continues to get up to speed in the pro game. Craig Reynolds might work his way into the mix with Gibbs if Montgomery is out. [Back to Top](#top) [] 17. ARI: Zach Ertz staying busy [Source: ESPN.com]() Arizona Cardinals TE Zach Ertz leads all tight ends with 18 targets through two games, and his 12 receptions rank second at the position. Our view: Ertz is the primary target for QB Josh Dobbs. From a fantasy perspective, that keeps the veteran in the TE1 range. There may be more exciting options out there, but Ertz is steady and reliable for his team and for Fantasy GMs. [Back to Top](#top) [] 18. KC: Kadarius Toney sitting Thursday [Source: ChiefsWire - Charles Goldman]() Kansas City Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney (toe) is not practicing Thursday, Sept. 21. Our view: Toney's status for Week 3 against the Bears is up in the air. If he plays, Toney is always at least a 'what the heck' flex in this high-powered offense. [Back to Top](#top) [] 19. MIN: Minnesota still confident in Alexander Mattison [Source: ESPN.com - Kevin Seifert](=) Minnesota Vikings RB Alexander Mattison is still receiving confidence from the coaching staff despite the trade to acquire RB Cam Akers, according to OC Wes Phillips on Thursday, Sept. 21. 'We haven't lost confidence in Alex Mattison. I will say that,' Phillips said. Our view: That's a nice sentiment, but always look at what they do and not what they say. The team made a move for RB Cam Akers, likely to take over in the backfield. Mattison has been highly unimpressive this season, and Akers should be the lead back as soon as he gets up to speed in the offense - which shouldn't be difficult because Kevin O'Connell's system is a Shanahan offense just like Sean McVay runs with the Rams. [Back to Top](#top) That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and thanks for being part of the Footballguys Family. We'll see you tomorrow with the Update.
