Travis Kelce GMs (like me) take a deep breath. It's almost here. I'm heading to beautiful Las Vegas for the kickoff and to draft the hopefully winning team in the [NFFC Primetime High Stakes Event](=) and I'd love to give the winnings to you. More on that below. We've also got one last cut of Average Draft Position data for you last-minute drafters plus our Cecil Lammey has the News and Notes you need. And lastly, hats off to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. He announced on Twitter Tuesday that he'd retired: Excited about another season but it's time to reveal after my 33rd NFL draft in April, I made a decision to step away from ESPN and focus on my health, family and faith. The gratitude and humility is overwhelming. It's not a classic retirement. I'll still be here talking ball. It's just time. God Bless you all. My favorite Mort story: Years ago, I met him at a conference. Flying home the next day, we were at the same airport gate. We talked for a bit and I asked if he was on my flight to Atlanta. He said he hoped to be but he was on Stand By. I said, "Stand by? You're Chris Mortensen. You don't do Stand By, right?" He graciously said, "Yeah, I could probably make something happen just because of how many miles I fly with Delta. But these people all want to get to where they're going just as much as I do. Doesn't seem right to make a fuss." They started boarding and called my section. I said goodbye and that I'd see him on the plane. He didn't make the Stand By cut and eventually got another flight. Always thought that was cool of him not to play the big shot card. Well done, Mr. Mortensen. Much respect. Enjoy retirement and thank you for setting an example for the rest of us. Let's Go. They have helped me dominate my league to the point that I'm called the Evil Empire by my league mates" - Rick Himes @bigisland31 [] 1. KC: Travis Kelce avoids serious injury - Noah Gray talk [Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport](=) Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (knee) is 'in doubt' to play in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions after hyperextending his knee in practice on Tuesday, Sept. 5. However, multiple sources are reporting that the injury is not believed to a long-term issue. Kansas City is expected to wait for the swelling to go down in his knee first before deciding on a timetable for his return. Our view: We'll see if Kelce can be ready for Thursday night. It sounds doubtful as of this writing, but anything can happen. Noah Gray would be starting if Kelce has to miss Week 1 against the Lions. I'm getting lots of questions on Noah Gray. Here's what our Matt Waldman wrote about Gray in the 2021 [Rookie Scouting Portfolio:]( "The Elevator Pitch for Gray: If Gray were 15-20 pounds heavier and his blocking skills improved with his weight difference he might challenge Brevin Jordan for the third spot on the RSP's board. Gray plays fast at all phases of the receiving game: against press, running routes, and transitioning downhill as from pass-catcher to runner. "He's a reliable pass catcher who adjusts well to targets at a variety of trajectories within his catch radius. He also has the acceleration to win in the short and intermediate passing games with his stems as well as after the catch as he turns up the field. Like Jordan—and likely more so than Jordan—Gray's lack of size may limit his potential despite having NFL-caliber receiving skills and promising work as a blocker within the scope of his size. "Because he's likely limited to the role of a lead blocker, backside blocker, and secondary option who helps with double teams, Gray's versatility lacks the breadth of an NFL starter. This is reinforced in the receiving game when considering that Gray is athletic, but not an elite speedster. "Still, if seeking a contributor who can help out in 12-personnel as a player who can flex easily from the backfield to the wing and/or the slot as a blocker and productive receiver, Gray can deliver reliable work. This will make him a good passing-down option in twominute sub-packages as well as a compelling red-zone contributor because of how his movement can create match-up advantages." [Back to Top](#top) [] 2. WAS: Terry McLaurin update [Source: The Washington Post - Nicki Jhabvala]() Washington Commanders WR Terry McLaurin (toe) is considered day-to-day and hopeful to play in the season opener. However, his status is still uncertain for Week 1, according to a source Tuesday, Sept. 5. Our view: [Back to Top](#top) [] 3. NE: HC talks improvement of Mac Jones [Source: ESPN.com - Mike Reiss]() New England Patriots QB Mac Jones had a tremendous offseason and training camp, according to head coach Bill Belichick. 'Mac's had a good offseason and has had a really good camp,' Belichick said Monday, Sept. 4. 'He understands the offense - how it works, how to get his teammates involved, how to help them be productive. S he's had a really good stretch here; it's been consistent all the way through.' Our view: Belichick throws around compliments like manhole covers, so this is a significant statement from the veteran coach. Jones may not be his coach's favorite, but if he runs the system and plays within himself the duo can win a lot of games together. We're excited to see if Jones does improve this year, but from a fantasy angle he's nothing more than a low-end QB2. [Back to Top](#top) [] 4. NE: Matt Corral could operate as No. 2 QB [Source: ESPN.com - Mike Reiss]() New England Patriots QB Matt Corral could potentially be used as the primary backup to QB Mac Jones as the roster is currently set. Head coach Bill Belichick is uncertain if Corral will be the No. 2 or No. 3. 'He hasn't even been on the field yet, so we'll see,' Belichick said. 'Matt was available; we'll add him to the group and see how it goes. Based on what we saw in Carolina and going back to the college film at Mississippi, he's a player we wanted to work with.' Our view: Corral was an interesting addition by the Patriots just about a week ago. He missed all of his rookie season due to a Lisfranc injury with the Panthers (that he suffered in a preseason game against the Patriots), and the former third-round pick (Ole Miss, 2022) has the skill set of a modern quarterback. He made the Panthers 53-man roster this year, was cut the next day, and the Patriots were quick to scoop him up. We'll see if he can perhaps start a few games for the team if Mac Jones struggles or gets banged up. The move to New England has injected life into Corral's dynasty stock to be sure. [Back to Top](#top) [] 5. SF: George Kittle able to do some sprinting [Source: ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner](=) San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (groin) was able to do some sprinting on the side during the early part of practice Monday, Sept. 4. Our view: Kittle suffered this groin injury a few weeks ago, and he should be ready for Week 1. He's incredibly talented but oft-injured, so let's see what Kittle's status is on Wednesday (and more importantly on Friday) before getting too excited about his prospects in Week 1 against the Steelers. [Back to Top](#top) [] 6. DET: Jahmyr Gibbs could stretch the field? [Source: DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman]( Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs 'made a ton of catches down the field in training camp,' according to Tim Twentyman of the team's website. Per Twentyman, Gibbs is the 'best pass-catching running back (he) has seen in 15 years covering the team' and could be one of the team's answers to addressing the lack of a vertical receiver while Jameson Williams is serving a six-game suspension to begin the season. Our view: We're excited to see everything Gibbs does for the Lions this year...because he can do everything. Gibbs is more than just a running back, he can be used as a slot receiver or as a deep threat. Gibbs is an RB2 with RB1 upside from a fantasy perspective this week as they play on Thursday against the Chiefs. [Back to Top](#top) [] 7. DAL: Michael Gallup primed for a bounce back [Source: The Athletic - Saad Yousuf and Jon Machota]( Dallas Cowboys WR Michael Gallup is healthy heading into Week 1 against the New York Giants, and he is looking to rebound after a pair of seasons trying to make his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Our view: CeeDee Lamb is there to take most of the attention from opposing secondaries, and Brandin Cooks is there to take the top off the defense. Gallup will work behind those two for targets, and we're excited to see if he can bounce back. From a fantasy perspective, Gallup is more of a 'what the heck' flex if he does get back on the right track. CHI: Chicago tabs Nathan Peterman as backup QB [Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Josh Alper]() Chicago Bears QB Nathan Peterman will reportedly be the team's primary backup to Justin Fields to start the 2023 season, according to head coach Matt Eberflus. Our view: Peterman has more experience than rookie Tyson Bagent, so he gets the call. If Justin Fields is banged up, the team would turn to Peterman...and that means he'd likely get replaced by Bagent at some point. [Back to Top](#top) [] 9. DAL: Dallas strongly committed to Dak Prescott [Source: ESPN.com - Todd Archer]() Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott's contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024 season - a year in which his deal is scheduled to bring a cap hit of $59.4 million. However, team owner Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, Sept. 5, that he expects Prescott 'to be with us a long time.' Our view: Jones loves Prescott, but the team wanted to see what they could develop out of Trey Lance. The former no.3 overall pick is no threat to Prescott, but we'll see how the Cowboys treat Prescott when his contract is closer to being up. [Back to Top](#top) [] 10. ATL: Cordarrelle Patterson needs to make progress [Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter]() Atlanta Falcons WR Cordarrelle Patterson (soft tissue) is dealing with a soft tissue injury, and he continues to be unable to practice. Head coach Arthur Smith said Monday, Sept. 4, that he hopes to get Patterson and other injured players on the practice field by Wednesday, Sept. 6 to begin game planning for Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers. Our view: Patterson missed time in training camp and the preseason due to this injury, but it was only supposed to keep him out of action for a couple of weeks. Now that the team is getting ready for Week 1 against the Panthers, Patterson is not yet ready to contribute. We'll see what he can do on Wednesday. [Back to Top](#top) [] 11. KC: Rashee Rice, Justyn Ross likely to be limited early [Source: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher]() Kansas City Chiefs WRs Rashee Rice and Justyn Ross are not expected to be overly involved in the offense early in the season, according to ESPN.com's Adam Teicher. Our view: That sounds about right. The team likes Rice, but he's not there yet in terms of being up to speed in a complex pro offense. Ross is a fantasy darling in deeper leagues, and he certainly has the "wow" factor when he's on the field with his size and ball skills. We appreciate both in dynasty, but Fantasy GMs should take a wait-and-see approach with the duo in traditional leagues. Keep both on your waiver wire speed dial if they're out there.
