They have helped me dominate my league to the point that I'm called the Evil Empire by my league mates" - Rick Himes @bigisland31 [] 1. TB: Season over for Ryan Jensen [Source: ESPN.com - Jenna Laine]( Tampa Bay Buccaneers C Ryan Jensen (knee) has been placed on the Reserve/Injured list and will miss the 2023 season, general manager Jason Licht announced Saturday, Aug. 26. Our view: Jensen is the veteran leader of the Bucs line and he will be missed as the Bucs offense is going through a rebuild. He suffered a serious knee injury in camp last year but did not have surgery so he could return in the playoffs. Robert Hainsey will start at center for the Bucs again this year. [Back to Top](#top) [] 2. CLE: Cleveland adds Pierre Strong [Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport](=) New England Patriots RB Pierre Strong was acquired by the Cleveland Browns Sunday, Aug. 27, in exchange for OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr., according to sources. Our view: Strong has great speed and is best used as an outside the tackles runner. There was some speculation that the team would add a reliable versatile veteran to the backfield after their Plan A for the backup to Nick Chubb, 2022 fifth-round pick Jerome Ford, went down with a hamstring injury, but instead they added Strong, who is more of a change of pace back than a three-down backup. Strong isn't worth drafting, but he's on our waiver wire radar if Chubb goes down. [Back to Top](#top) [] 3. CLE: Jakeem Grant to miss 2023 season [Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport](=) Cleveland Browns WR Jakeem Grant (knee) will miss the entire 2023 season after being diagnosed with a ruptured patellar tendon, according to sources. Our view: This should open up a spot for Jaelon Darden The Browns will need keep some more speed and return game help with Grant out for the season, although they did at least get veteran deep threat Marquise Goodwin back from the NFI list, where he had been since the start of camp because of blood clots in lungs and legs. [Back to Top](#top) [] 4. NYJ: Mekhi Becton named starter at right tackle [Source: NFL.com - Eric Edholm]( New York Jets OT Mekhi Becton was named the team's starting right tackle by head coach Robert Saleh, following the team's last preseason game versus the New York Giants Saturday, Aug. 26. Our view: Becton staying healthy and playing well enough to be the starting right tackle is great news for a team with a lot of questions on the offensive line that is also adjusting to a new veteran starter at quarterback. If Duane Brown's shoulder holds up and the team gets most of the games with Becton and Brown at tackle, they should exceed expectations on offense. [Back to Top](#top) [] 5. IND: Kenyan Drake released [Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero]() The Indianapolis Colts released RB Kenyan Drake Sunday, Aug. 27, according to a source. Our view: There was some thought that Drake could figure into a backfield that might lose Jonathan Taylor to trade and possibly miss Zack Moss at the beginning of the season with a broken forearm, but the team opted not to keep his veteran presence. They did have Kareem Hunt in for a visit earlier in the preseason, so we'll keep tabs on that interest if Taylor is dealt before the team's self-imposed Tuesday deadline for a trade. [Back to Top](#top) [] 6. CIN: Joseph Ossai exits early [Source: The Cincinnati Enquirer - Kelsey Conway]( Cincinnati Bengals DE Joseph Ossai (foot) exited the preseason game against the Washington Commanders and went to the locker room with trainers Saturday, Aug. 26. Our view: Ossai was having a great rookie camp two years ago before going down. Now he got hurt in a meaningless preseason game. The team had hoped that he and 2023 first-round pick Myles Murphy would give them excellent depth on the edge, but now Trey Hendrickson and Sam Hubbard might need to play more snaps than expected early in the season. [Back to Top](#top) [] 7. SF: Zane Gonzalez week-to-week [Source: ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner]( San Francisco 49ers PK Zane Gonzalez (calf) is considered week-to-week due to a calf strain, per a source Saturday, Aug. 26. Our view: The 49ers are in trouble with both kickers on their roster questionable for Week 1 at best. Third-round pick Jake Moody has a quad strain, so with both Gonzalez and Moody hurting, the team could bring back Robbie Gould. Kyle Shanahan did not shut down the possibility when asked. [Back to Top](#top) [] 8. IND: Danny Pinter out for season [Source: Indianapolis Star - Joel A. Erickson]( Indianapolis Colts OG Danny Pinter (ankle) suffered a broken ankle during the preseason Week 3 game on Thursday, Aug. 24, and is out for the season. Our view: Pinter is one of the Colts top backups on the interior offensive line. Indianapolis offensive line depth is an issue going into the season. The offense could be more sensitive an injury on the line with Pinter on the shelf until next year. [Back to Top](#top) [] 9. NE: Cole Strange still sidelined [Source: ESPN.com - Mike Reiss]() New England Patriots OG Cole Strange (knee) has not practices since early in training camp because of a knee injury, but he has a chance to be ready for the start of the regular season. Our view: The Patriots at least got some good news when arguably their best offensive lineman, Michael Onwenu, got activated from the PUP list. It's not clear if Onwenu will stay at guard to pair with Strange, or perhaps kick outside to right tackle, where he has some experience. The Patriots have tried Riley Reiff, Conor McDermott, and rookie fourth-round pick Sidy Sow at right tackle, with only Reiff looking at least serviceable, but Reiff is considered by many to be a better guard than tackle at this point in his career. [Back to Top](#top) [] 10. NYJ: Mecole Hardman injures finger [Source: The Athletic - Zack Rosenblatt]() New York Jets WR Mecole Hardman (finger) is expected to be 'fine' after suffering a finger injury during the preseason game against the New York Giants Saturday, Aug. 26, according to head coach Robert Saleh. Our view: Hardman is expected to play a large role in the offense, especially after Corey Davis unexpectedly retired this week. The Jets need him as a short range target who can create run after catch opportunities on quick passes. He's not draftable in a typical league, but Hardman could be an early waiver wire candidate if the Jets lean on him. [Back to Top](#top) [] 11. SF: Talanoa Hufanga has Baker cyst [Source: NBC Sports Bay Area - Matt Maiocco]( San Francisco 49ers DB Talanoa Hufanga (knee) is dealing with a Baker cyst, a fluid-filled growth behind the knee, per a source Saturday, Aug. 26. Our view: Hufanga had a PRP injection to help healing. He should be available for Week 1, but IDP players need to monitor his availability for the opener at Pittsburgh. Third round pick Ji'Ayir Brown could play more early in the season if Hufanga is not up to his normal snap load. [Back to Top](#top) [] 12. SF: Cameron Latu likely needs surgery [Source: ESPN.com - Nick Wagoner]( San Francisco 49ers TE Cameron Latu (knee) is likely heading for surgery to repair a meniscus injury, per a source Saturday, Aug. 26. Our view: The converted linebacker was coming on in the preseason, but he'll likely have to go on injured reserve to begin the season, opening up a roster spot for another bubble player. [Back to Top](#top) [] 13. CIN: Jake Browning pushing for backup gig [Source: ESPN.com](=) Cincinnati Bengals QB Jake Browning said he feels he made a strong case to be the No. 2 quarterback this season. 'You're never going to play perfect, but I feel pretty good about what I put on tape and all that and practices have been going well,' Browning said. 'We'll see how this thing shakes out.' Our view: He has probably played well enough to beat out Trevor Siemian, but the Bengals still look like a team that will be in big trouble if their starter goes down. That starter, Joe Burrow, is coming into the season nursing a groin injury, so the Bengals offense needs that injury to stay confined to the preseason to avoid a rough stretch with a subpar backup quarterback. [Back to Top](#top) [] 14. NE: Tyquan Thornton could be IR candidate [Source: ESPN.com - Mike Reiss]() New England Patriots WR Tyquan Thornton (shoulder) is a candidate to start the season on the Reserve/Injured list because of a shoulder injury. Our view: Thornton wasn't standing out in camp anyway. Rookies Demario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte could play roles in the passing game behind DeVante Parker, Juju Smith-Schuster, and Kendrick Bourne at wide receiver with Thornton looking like a non-factor for now. [Back to Top](#top) That'll do it for today, Folks. Thanks for reading and thanks for being part of the Footballguys Family. We'll see you tomorrow with the Update.
